Oregon Beer News, 04/16/2019

Henry WeinhardHappy Tuesday! According to Jay Brooks, it was on this day, April 16, in 1856 that Henry Weinhard arrived in Oregon. Our state’s beer history would be quite different were it not for Weinhard, so raise a glass and toast Oregon’s beer pioneer sometime today! In the meantime, here is the news for this Tuesday, which I’ll be updating throughout the day, so check back often for the latest.

The Bier Stein (Eugene) is hosting Beer Flight School this evening, on the topic of “Haze Wars” — hazy IPAs, of course: “OK, OK, these beers are super fun to drink. But do they hold up under scrutiny? Challenge your palate to detect subtle flavors in these bold beers, and get a feel for when haze matters, and why. Included in the flight are some IPA mythbusters and more information about hops than you really need. Beer Flight School is hosted by Aaron Brussat – Certified Cicerone, beer writer, homebrewer, and editor of the Northwest Brewing News. Flight School is for anybody who wants to expand their knowledge of beer! Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the bar.”

Deschutes Brewery (Bend): Tuesdays are Community Pints days at the Deschutes locations, where $1 from every pint sold goes to benefit a local non-profit. For the month of April, the Bend Pub and Tasting Room are benefiting Healthy Beginnings of Central Oregon, while in Portland the Pub is benefiting Store to Door of Multnomah County. Be sure to stop in for a pint or 3 to help out today.

Oregon City Brewing has its Charity Pint Night tonight starting at 5pm, where the brewery will be raising money Camp Ukandu. “join Us for an evening of giving & beer! Starting at 5:00pm for PINT NIGHT at Oregon City Brewing Company! $1.00 will be donated to Camp Ukandu for each drink, including sodas purchase from 5pm-closing.”

Pelican Brewing (Pacific City) is partnering with Portland’s Elephants Delicatessen to create a special 40th anniversary beer for the specialty food store, 1979 Pale Ale, which will officially launch on this Friday, April 19. From the press release: “When Elephants Delicatessen found themselves upon their 40th year of business, they wanted to do something a little different. They reached out to Pelican and decided that there is no better way to celebrate than with a beer. Both Pelican and Elephants strive to make their products part of their customer’s day-to-day experiences, and this 1979 beer is no different. A nod to Elephants founding year, the beer was invented with the Northwest in mind. With a pure foundation of Cascade and Centennial hops, 1979 was created to perfectly pair with your favorite lunch in your favorite setting. Grab this Northwest Pale Ale and take a virtual getaway with every sip. You’ll find a bright, clean aroma, zesty citrus flavor, easy drinkability and a rich, golden color. Yum!”

Hood River’s Double Mountain Brewery is releasing a new cider, Red Fleshed Rosé. From the release: “Our press is working hard, allowing us to enthusiastically experiment with all things apples and pears. Red-Fleshed Mountain Rose and Pink Pearl apples add subtle color to this lightly tart cider, with delicate aromas of citrus and raspberry. This cider is dry and effervescent, leaving behind notes of tart cranberry and chardonnay. What fun to work with single varietals of apples. These red fleshed versions are beautiful when cut open, and have a slightly less sugary, more delicate flavor than your typical dessert varieties. When pressed and fermented, a light pink hue comes through and the delicate flavors come across much like a tannic white wine. The Champagne yeast aids in this, yielding a lightly fruited aroma, dominated by almost ripe red fruits (raspberry, strawberry), cranberry, and a bit of citrus rind (grapefruit).”

Cascade Lakes Brewing (Redmond) has a new beer out today: “ON TAP NOW AT OUR BEND PUB!!! Our new Brewmaster’s first creation- OG Kush Hoppy Pale Ale. Cascade Lakes Brewing Company brings things back to its O.G. roots with this NW pale ale. A hopped-up splash of deliciousness and an inviting aroma that will send your taste buds for a spin in this crushable ale! Cascade Lakes is one of the Original Gangsters in the NW Beer scene and we are proud to share this with the Hood!”

Yachats Brewing also has a new summery beer on tap, Summer Slammer, a “Blended Lacto Sour w Fruit” that is 4% ABV: “Bright, tart tropical fruit flavors abound in this puckering summertime ale! A lactobacillus primary fermentation creates a base tartness, and then is finished with an American ale yeast to ferment the remaining sugars besides the lactose. This sunshiney beer was blended with a small amount of saison and topped off with passionfruit and tangerine fruit puree, making it a juicy beermosa style treat for anytime of the day!”

Belmont Station is celebrating its golden birthday on Monday, April 22 with its 22nd birthday! “Fresh off the heels of several recent accolades—including the Oregon Beer Awards Best Beer Bar/Bottle Shop for five years straight (since the awards’ inception) and listed among USA Today’s “10Best Beer Bars in the U.S.” for the past three years –Belmont Station celebrates 22 years of beers on Monday, April 22, with an Earth Day fundraiser and special beers made just for the event.” Belmont teamed up with 4 Oregon breweries for collaboration ales which will be on tap as well: Barley Brown’s, Culmination, Ruse, and Wayfinder. Don’t miss out!

McMenamins has a number of Friends & Family Night fundraisers tonight, starting at 5pm, where 50% of the night’s proceeds from 5:00 on are donating to a local organization. Here are the participating locations for tonight:

Modern Times Beer (Portland) has a new collaboration beer on tap: “NOW POURING: Pillars of Eternity. The excellent folks from Holy Mountain Brewing recently visited the Belmont Fermentorium to summon forth this ridiculously tasty decocted IPA. We set aside a small portion of the pilsner malt & let it rest at a couple crucial temperatures before boiling and adding it to the rest of the mash, yielding some complex malt character and body to go with the absurd amounts of Citra, Strata, Idaho 7, and Mosaic hops we subsequently introduced. Ready your body for a beautifully soft 7% beverage that explodes with intense notes of pineapple, candied peaches, mango, and citrus, because this Belmont-exclusive brew is on right now (quantities hella limited).”

Silver Moon Brewing (Bend) has a new canned beer dropping: “Did we just release our latest #LunarSeries AND our first Hazy in a can all wrapped up in one? Your mother-hazing right we did! #SimonSays will push all the right buttons with a clementine and passion fruit aroma and tropical pineapple finish. Clocking in at a respectable 7.6% ABV and 30 IBU. Simon Says ‘Embrace the haze!'”

Baerlic Brewing (Portland) also has new beer dropping in cans today: “CAN RELEASE! Dubble Yum Double Hazy IPA drops TODAY at 4pm in our southeast Portland Brewery & Taproom. Dubble Yum is a Soft’N’Juicy Hazy Double IPA brewed with boatloads of Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo and Vic Secret hops…It’s A Super Yum!!”
