Oregon Beer News for Wednesday, April 7, 2021

Here’s the Oregon beer news to celebrate National Beer Day! National Beer Day observes the return of 3.2% beer heralding the end of Prohibition; the Cullen-Harrison Act which brought it about was enacted by Congress on March 21, 1933, and signed into law by President Roosevelt on April 7. The 18th Amendment was subsequently repealed in December of that year.

So pop open a cold one and catch up on Oregon’s scene with today’s news roundup. As usual I’ll be updating this post throughout the afternoon so be sure to check back occasionally.

Hopworks earns multiple awards in New York

Hopworks Urban Brewery announced yesterday that it won several medals at the 10th Annual New York International Beer Competition, one in which the beers “are judged by a trade-only blind panel. The tasters—buyers, importers, retail buyers and restaurateurs—are industry-savvy and passionate about good beer and knowledgeable about what makes a truly marketable brew.” The awards HUB won are:

  • A gold medal for Beestly Organic Honey Porter in the Robust Porter, $10 – Less category;
  • A silver medal for Powell Cryo IPA in the American-style India Pale Ale, $10 – Less category;
  • And a bronze medal for Juicy Bear IPA in the American-style India Pale Ale, $10 – Less category.
  • HUB was also awarded the Oregon Porter Brewery of the Year Award.

Congrats to Hopworks on the wins! I haven’t gone through all the medal winners on the page but I did find these others under “Individual Winners”:

  • Oregon Brewery of the Year: Rosenstadt Brewery
  • Oregon IPA Brewery of the Year: Full Sail Brewing Co
  • Oregon Lager Brewery of the Year: Rip Van Winkle Brewing
  • Oregon Porter Brewery of the Year: Hopworks Urban Brewery
  • Oregon Stout Brewery of the Year: Migration Brewing

RazzBerry Cider from Portland Cider Company returns

Portland Cider Company first released its RazzBerry Cider last year, and the cidery announced its spring return yesterday. From the press release:

RazzBerry features loads of bright raspberries combined with Northwest-grown apples, a hint of lemon and lime juice. This refreshingly tart cider is medium sweet for easy drinking. The cider is 5.8% ABV and well-suited to backyard fun and sunny spring adventures.

This spring seasonal cider is bright and zesty, reminiscent of a raspberry lemonade, with strong berry notes and a light sweetness. It makes a fantastic cider cocktail ingredient, and pairs equally well with grilled meats and hearty salads.

RazzBerry is available now at the company’s Clackamas Taproom and Cidery at 8925 SE Jannsen Road, Building F, and at the Portland Cider House at 3638 SE Hawthorne Boulevard. It will hit store shelves and bar taps throughout the month of April.

Pelican Brewing collaborates with the Portland Thorns to release Slide Tackle Hazy IPA

Pacific City’s Pelican Brewing announced the release of its latest beer, Slide Tackle Hazy IPA, a collaboration with the Portland Thorns soccer team. Details:

Kick-off the Portland Thorns 2021 season with Pelican Brewing Company’s new seasonal beer, Slide Tackle Hazy India Pale Ale, made in collaboration with the Portland Thorns. This goal-provoking beer comes in with a vengeance sweeping your tastebuds off their feet with tropical, hoppy, and citrus flavors followed by balanced bitterness and a clean finish, just like a Thorns’ goal. Slide Tackle is available in the stadium at Providence Park at all Portland Thorns and Timbers home games, 12 oz. six-packs, Pelican’s three coastal brewpubs, and local watering holes.

Averaging over 20,000 fans per match in 2019, Thorns FC is the top-attended women’s professional sports franchise in the world. Fellow fanatics of both Pelican Brewing company and the Portland Thorns can enjoy this seasonal can throughout the Thorns 2021 season in-stadium or from their local Portland-area grocery store. Like all Pelican beers, Slide Tackle is born at the beach by a team of award-winning craft beer makers known for brewing styles of beer that they love to drink. Cheers!

Zupan’s partners with Von Ebert Brewing for latest Farm to Market beer

Portland’s Von Ebert Brewing is the latest brewery to collaborate with Zupan’s Markets to brew up the latest in the Farm to Market series of collaboration beers offered by the grocery chain. This new beer is a pilsner-styled lager.

Zupan’s Markets has partnered with Portland’s own Von Ebert Brewing to develop the 14th beer in its Farm-to-Market lineup. An extension of the brewery’s exploration of pilsners, the Von Ebert Modern Citra Pilsner blends new varieties of German hops with modern American hop products that defy tradition and push flavor profiles.

The Farm to Market Von Ebert Modern Citra Pilsner collaboration is exclusively available at all three Zupan’s Markets locations for $13.99 for a four pack and $4.99 for a single can. It is also available on draft and in cans at both Von Ebert Glendoveer and Von Ebert Pearl.

Modern Citra Pilsner is 5.2% ABV and has a “Full hop profile” of Magnum (boil), Mandarina Bavaria (boil), Citra Incognito CO2 Extract (whirlpool), Saphir (dry Hop), and Citra Cryo (dry hop).

1188 Brewing closed, hit by covid

John Day’s 1188 Brewing posted today that it will be closed through at least the 14th due to covid exposure.

Sadly we are going to have to close until April 14 at a minimum due to Covid exposure. The health and safety of our customers and employees are our top priorities. We will spend the next week cleaning and hoping for no additional exposures. If we need to close longer, we will post it here. Everyone stay safe!

I hope everyone stays well.

Ground Breaker’s batch 1000!

A milestone of note from Portland’s award-winning gluten-free Ground Breaker Brewing today: the 1000th batch!

Batch 1,000! It’s fitting that number one thousand is Dark Ale, the beer with the most GABF Medals to its name in the Gluten-Free category, period. Come on down to the pub and get your piece of history in a can. Here’s to the next 1,000 batches, friends!

Widmer’s newest collab beer with the Portland Timbers

In more soccer/beer news, Widmer Brothers Brewing posted about its newest collaboration with the Portland Timbers:

Monkless can release for The FNG

Bend’s Monkless Belgian Ales had a limited-release beer named The FNG because of a brewhouse new guy screw-up that turned into a happy accident, an abbey ale that was “chock full of toffee and caramel, balanced with notes of pepper and clove in a clean, crisp finish.” This year Monkless decided to bring the beer back, in cans, and this Monday, April 12, the brewery is hosting a can release for it.

If you plan to stop by to pick some up, keep in mind that Deschutes County is re-entering the “High” covid risk category this week, so don’t linger.
