New Holland Brewing Lightpoint Functional White Ale – crowlers and cans

New Holland Lightpoint Functional White Ale - crowler

It occurs to me that as we’re all sitting at home drinking beer under the COVID-19 social distancing orders, we may not be getting the daily activity in that we’re used to. (Especially those of us with desk jobs working remotely, like I’ve been for over a week now.) So at this stage in the pandemic, drinking lower-calorie “lifestyle” beers is a sensible way to moderate if you find yourself drinking more than usual.

I’ve got reviews on non-alcoholic beers coming up too, but for right now—enter New Holland Brewing Lightpoint Functional White Ale. This low-cal, low-carb take on a Belgian white ale was with coconut water, raw honey, and orange peel, and comes in at 3.7% ABV with 2.3 grams of carbs per can, for a total of 86 calories.

New Holland is billing Lightpoint as a great beer that is “best enjoyed with friends after a day of hard work and exercise;” the press release called it an “active pursuits” beer that is “designed to provide a refreshing and responsible post-pursuit experience.” (I guess “pursuit” in this case refers to pursuit of recreation though the phrasing gives me a “Most Dangerous Game” vibe.)

The beer is rolling out this month, and you may recall the brewery sent me both a couple of early-preview crowlers and followed up with 12-ounce cans. I’ve tried each and made notes on both because that’s beer geeky thing to do—essentially comparing draft to packaged versions.

Appearance: (Crowler) Golden yellow, bright and relatively clear. Head is white and crisp, with decent persistence and good legs. (Can) Clear, bright, golden, brassy, really attractive. Head is also crisp and white, with a nice initial buildup that falls back to a skein.

Smell: (Crowler) Really bright with fresh orange zest and orange blossom florals. There’s a hint of coriander spiciness, and some light wheaty bread notes. (Can) Really bright and fresh oranges, like a bag of freshly picked fruit. Fresher and more aromatic than the crowler (due simply to packaging dates, I got the crowlers earlier remember), the coriander is more subtle while the orange aroma is redolent and big.

Taste: (Crowler) Light and crisp, a nice wheat body with easy toastiness that’s a bit Cream of Wheat and bread crust. There’s a gentle orange zest flavor for a nice citrus spiciness that’s mellow and pleasantly floral. (Can) Wheaty, herbal, a more prominent coriander flavor—just the slightest bit hammy in fact. Orange zest and bread crust and crisp floral notes. I can’t detect any coconut though, considering that’s one of the listed ingredients.

Mouthfeel: (Both) Crisp, light bodied, a hint of tart zest and an herbal, floral finish.

Overall: This is a pretty good beer, with huge notes of orange (fruit and floral). Even if you didn’t play up the “functional” aspect of this package, this is just a nice beer.
