Latest print article: Spring hazy pale ale roundup
My latest article for The Bulletin that came out this past week takes a look at hazy pale ales. I’ve noticed this spring a number of local breweries introducing new (or returning) hazy pales, some seasonal, some year round; I don’t know if it’s a trend but I thought it an interesting topic to cover.
When it comes to hazy pale ales, breweries are offering up the same nebulous depths and juice-like characteristics in a lower-strength, more sessionable package than the standard IPA. Pale ales in general have less hop intensity and a bit more focus on malt than IPAs, and this applies to hazies as well.
This spring, several new local hazy pale ales hit the shelves, so I rounded up a selection of these beers to see how they compare.
There are five I covered:
- Kia Kaha Hazy Pale from Crux Fermentation Project (new, year-round)
- Hazy Falls Pale Ale, Three Creeks Brewing (new, year-round)
- Sippy Cup Hazy Pale, GoodLife Brewing (went year-round in 2019)
- Neon Daydream Hazy Ale, Deschutes Brewery (returning seasonal for its second year)
- Hidden Trail NW Hazy Pale Ale, Wild Ride Brewing (added to year-round in 2018)
Check out the article for my notes on each beer.
