Fresh hop season 2022 – final wrap-up

Oregon Brewers Guild State of Excitement Fresh Hop West Coast IPA

Okay let’s face it—I’m not going to finish out my 2022 fresh hop beer reviews in the three-at-a-time review posts I’d been doing; there are too many other beer reviews to get to and lots of other writing and work taking up my time. But I still wanted to note the rest of them, so I’m wrapping up fresh hop season with this post and offering up one or two (or three) sentence reviews of the remaining fresh hop beers I drank this season.

All I Do is Strata – Fresh Hop Hazy IPA – Via Beer (Portland, OR)

  • 6% ABV; Strata hops from Crosby Farms
  • Aroma had bright stone fruit character, peach perhaps, with a dash of citrus; herbs, floral notes, oak leaves. Flavor was punchy and zesty with fresh notes of garden greens (chard, microgreens), fruit skins, sage, fresh clover. One of the better fresh hop hazies I’ve had.

D’Kine Fresh Hop IPA – Sunriver Brewing (Sunriver, OR)

  • 6.5% ABV, 55 IBUs; Mosaic hops
  • Dank and herbal aroma with a big ripe fruit note; tobacco, wild greens, raspberry leaf. Solid bitterness and spicy-fresh hop flavor that’s got tobacco, dandelion, radish, some green berry. Super solid and excellent.

Big Ed’s Honey Bock – Fox River Brewing (Oshkosh, WI)

  • 5.4% ABV; CTZ, Centennial, Sterling, Cascade, late Cluster hops
  • Bready malt with some dark honey, a hint of wet grass clippings and warm field greens in the aroma, while the flavor has some herbal (tea) character with corn husk, a slight spicy note like black pepper and maybe parsley or basil. Subtle, but the fresh hops were there.

Fresh Hop IPA – Gratitude Brewing (Eugene, OR)

  • 6.6% ABV, 50 IBUs; Citra, Mosaic hops
  • Big herbal nose with a bit of bright citrus, a dank note with a touch of sweat and allium. Herbal in flavor as well with a spicy-minty component, some melon rind, citrus rind, hop stems. Some cannabis as it warms; the hop blend works well overall.

State of Excitement Fresh Hop West Coast IPA – Oregon Brewers Guild collaboration

  • 6% ABV; Amarillo hops; brewed at Little Beast Brewing (Portland, OR)
  • Orange and orange marmalade aroma, fresh herbs that remind me a bit of cilantro. Flavor has great herbal character that’s savory, minty-fresh, mildly bitter, with a bit of orange rind and yarrow. It’s good, with a great fresh component.

Fresh IPA – Fort George Brewery (Astoria, OR)

  • 6.4% ABV; Luminosa hops
  • Floral with some delicate wildflower, lightly fruity, something slightly woody, pretty mellow nose overall. Really nice “bark” character that’s almost herbal and slightly woody, sounds odd but I like it. Different from the rest.

Fresh Hop Strata IPA – pFriem Family Brewers (Hood River, OR)

  • 6.9% ABV; Strata hops
  • Fruity aroma with green melon, papaya, a touch of cannabis, orange blossom, some green tea. Flavor has big herbal notes of tobacco, cannabis, cucumber skin, Italian parsley, solid bitterness. Quite nice and a good handling of the Strata.

Fresh Hop IPA – Breakside Brewery (Portland, OR)

  • 6.2% ABV; Cascade hops
  • Fruit that leans towards a citrus marmalade with a splash of stone fruit like nectarine, then an earthy-woody-piney-soil component in the nose. It goes resinous in flavor, earthy duff with a bitter citrus pith profile. Good bitterness, some menthol; it’s another tasty Breakside fresh hop beer.

Aroma Train Fresh Hop Kellerpils – Lumberbeard Brewing (Spokane, WA)

  • 5% ABV; Idaho Gem hops
  • Floral and spicy like (wild) mustard greens, and mustard seed, all in the aroma. A good spicy-earthy flavor with a pop of herbaceous “green” and a bit of that mustard-like character, though it’s more like horseradish greens in the taste. Pretty tasty and it’s an interesting hop being showcased.

Fields of Green Wet Hop IPA – Fort George Brewery (Astoria, OR)

  • 7.6% ABV; HBC 586 hops
  • Melon and musk aroma, touch of dank; damp meadow with some mossy oak leaves, hints of papaya, melon rind. Flavor is fresh greens and dank, with some allium and a bit of cilantro-like herb. Solid IPA that’s not really “hazy” despite how it looks, with an interesting hop profile.

Fresh Hop Ace of Spades Imperial IPA – Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland, OR)

  • 8.6% ABV; Strata hops
  • Initial whiff of papaya, alcohol esters, some melon rind that’s been prevalent with this year’s Strata, musky/sweaty, fresh greens. It’s a big IPA with a touch of booziness and a nice bitterness level, with fresh herbal-fruity character that’s a bit mustard-like. It’s good as always but the strength dampens the fresh hop character.

Fresh Hop Simcoe Bitter – Machine House Brewery (Seattle, WA)

  • 4% ABV; Simcoe hops from Loftus Ranches
  • Dank and lightly fruity in the nose, with a citrusy note and a pop of cannabis; some cut grass and milk thistle. The flavor has tobacco, black tea, grapefruit pith with a solid, spicy bitterness, toasty clean malt, bitter melon, milk thistle or dandelion, oak leaf, chard. It’s pretty nice and Machine House is always a treat.

Amarillo Fresh Hop IPA – Structures Brewing (Bellingham, WA)

  • 6.2% ABV; Amarillo hops
  • Floral and lemony, with dandelion flower, and fresh hop stems. Nicely bitter with a bit of spicy character (peppercorn, mustard seed), a bit woody, and bitter hop tea bordering on astringent. It’s decent, with the fresh hop aroma better than the flavor.

Chasin’ Freshies Fresh Hop IPA – Deschutes Brewery (Bend, OR)

  • 6.5% ABV; Idaho 7 hops
  • Light passion fruit aroma, crushed lamb’s quarter, fresh pine boughs with some pitch, touch of sweat, composting grass. Tangerine peel in the flavor, with pine tree pitch, and a spicy “heat” note I can’t quite place… touch of Szechuan peppercorn with garlic greens, maybe. I’d like more fruity, chlorophyll/essential oil character.
