Drinking through Worthy Brewing’s pantheon of cans

Received: Worthy Brewing's new cans

Worthy Brewing recently sent me five beers in its new can lineup, featuring the first rollout in a rebranding effort to help unify its packaged products. These are a handsome set of cans and feature the new year-round lineup:

  • Worthy IPA
  • Strata IPA
  • Lights Out Stout
  • Sol Power Pilsner (new)
  • Secret Spot Pacific Pale (new)

The branding designs on these cans is frankly the type of sharp, unified look that I’ve been wanting to see from Worthy since… well, since they started packaging in bottles and cans. They look good.

The beer inside is good, too. I haven’t had much of Worthy’s core lineup in awhile, so this was a good refresher and I have to say, they are tasting as good as they’ve ever been, if not better. Let’s run through my notes.

Worthy IPA

Worthy IPA

Stats: 6.9% ABV, 69 IBUs, brewed with Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Crystal, Meridian, Nugget, and Mosaic hops (Mosaic in dry hop). Canned on March 14, reviewed on April 4.

Appearance: Bright and crystal clear with a nice copper color. Fluffy, delicate white head with good lacy structure.

Smell: Resiny American/New World hops, pine, lightly fruity. Overall quite mellow with a resin-laced earthiness. Toasted bread crust.

Taste: Clean, lightly bitter with an herbal-spicy note. Earthy and lightly minty at the back, reminiscent of eucalyptus. The flavor keeps rounding back to a clean, lightly piney bitterness, with a light toasty malt body that biscuity with fresh baked break flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a lightness on the tongue, finishing crisp with a gentle lingering bitterness.

Overall: This is a solid, drinkable, workhorse IPA. The aroma, as it warms, gets more expressive with earthy forest floor notes. That’s the defining aroma of this beer, I think.

Worthy Secret Spot Pacific Pale

Secret Spot Pacific Pale

Stats: 4.9% ABV, 33 IBUs, brewed with a smorgasbord of hops: Cascade, Centennial, Perle, Sterling, Strata, Amarillo, Citra, Ekuanot, and Simcoe. Canned on March 12, reviewed on April 5.

Appearance: Clear, deep bronze color, amber at the edges and quite brilliant when held to the light. Off white, clotted cream colored head, lacy and slightly chaotic.

Smell: Pine, orange blossoms, some sliced mango, bag of oranges. Nutty malts with light toffee notes. Earthy.

Taste: Gentle spicy-earthy bitterness tempered by nutty, Vienna-like malts. Dark bread crust, some black tea hop flavor, and complex malt character with walnut shells, roasted tubers, toast, Grape Nuts. Good balance on the hops without any unneeded bittering and a touch of spicy herb.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, lusciously drinkable.

Overall: Quite drinkable with some interesting malt character… easy drinking, it’s going down quick so definitely nicely sessionable.

Worthy Strata IPA

Strata IPA

Stats: 6.5% ABV, 60 IBUs, brewed with Meridian, Nugget, Strata, and Mosaic hops. Canned on March 20, reviewed on April 10.

Appearance: Clear and bright, honey-orange color, shiny and golden when held to the light. Off white rocky(ish) head that breaks to a skiff of foam pretty quickly.

Smell: Stone fruit, pineapple, sweat. Bright and fruity, summery, with hint of peppercorns.

Taste: Spicy-zesty hop flavors up front, fresh, with a light peppery bitterness. Crisp, lightly crackery malt backs the hops well and is flavorful without being obtrusive. It has a savory juice notes that’s appetizing and prompts taking another sip—nicely drinkable with a good hop character that’s sessionable yet still reads “IPA.”

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a light crisp edge to it, with a juicy finish that lingers into gentle spice.

Overall: Quite good, better than last time I had it, this would/should be a Worthy Brewing go-to beer. Great balance all around, with a tasty yet mellow malt base and a sublimely spicy-bitter hop full of the flavor I want—not too fruity, not too oniony, not too vegetal.

Worthy Sol Power Pilsner

Sol Power Pilsner

Stats: 4.8% ABV, 19 IBUs, brewed with Mecca Grade Estate Malt, and Nugget, Sterling, Mandarina Bavaria, and Saphir hops. Canned on March 12, reviewed on April 14.

Appearance: Crystal clear, gold in color, matches the color of the can pretty well. Brilliant clarity. Head is white and crisp, with pretty good persistence.

Smell: Grainy, bready malt with gentle floral hops that are lightly lemony and fresh cut mango. Delicate. Grainy note at the back.

Taste: Spicy orange blossom hops, with a Saaz-like zestiness. Softly grainy with a crackery malt. Touch of green apple as it warms. Clean, refreshing, residual malt character lingers into the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied, crisp, with a pleasant aftertaste.

Overall: Overall tasty and quite good, the Mecca Grade malt shines here. Simple and elegant, brewed with a deft hand.

Worthy Lights Out Stout

Lights Out Stout

Stats: 7.7% ABV, 30 IBUs, brewed with Bob’s Red Mill oats, milk sugar, and Madagascar vanilla beans, and Cascade, Nugget, and Santiam hops. Canned on March 11, reviewed on April 16.

Appearance: Black with deep ruby-brown highlights at the edges when held to the light. Head is tan/light brown that is creamy and full.

Smell: Nutty, sweet dark caramel and Turkish coffee. No roast or astringency at all, but some sweet vanilla and rich chocolate notes. Quite smooth and nicely dark without being harsh.

Taste: Some nicely nutty roastiness up front, with cocoa, cold brewed coffee, walnut shells, and a savory char note. Lightly ashy. Touch of vanilla as it warms. Pretty classic stout profile.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body, roasty-dry, moderate carbonation and a dry(ish) nutty finish.

Overall: Pretty good, a nicely gentled-roasted stout with sweet notes that doesn’t go extreme in any direction.
