Avid Cider: Blueberry Pom Imperial Cider (review)

Avid Cider Blueberry Pom Imperial Cider

Earlier this fall Avid Cider released the latest addition to its year-round imperial cider lineup, Blueberry Pom Imperial Cider. Like the others in the imperial series, it’s 8.5% alcohol by volume, instead of the 6-to-6.2% of its other ciders. The recipe is an imperialized version of the cidery’s classic Blueberry Pomegranate. Avid had sent me samples along with the press release which you can read here.

Here’s what the website description says:

Savor a whirlpool of juicy blueberry flavor complimented by notes of refreshing pomegranate. This cider pours a deep magenta color, reminiscent of freshly crushed blueberries. An enticing aroma evoking sun-kissed orchards and a rush of cool berry and pomegranate notes will swell your senses. The semi-sweet finish provides a fruity experience that is both approachable and sophisticated.

As a side note in recent Avid Cider news, the company, which was acquired by Blake’s Hard Cider last year, welcomed Texas-based Austin Eastciders into the fold, all three of which are now under the Blake’s Beverage Company portfolio. While this particular news has no bearing on my review of Blueberry Pom Imperial, it will be interesting to see Avid’s growth and evolution progresses moving into the new year.

Now, to the review notes!

Appearance: Deep purple color which softens to a ruby when held to the light, with some clarity. It’s semi-active with a steady stream of bubble and has a pink foam.

Smell: Pleasantly fruity with blueberry and pomegranate juice as advertised, along with some earthy rusticity from the apples—skin and apple blossoms are what come to mind. A slightly floral ethanol note, perhaps?

Taste: A tartness that gives a bright kick up front followed by sweet pomegranate and what I’d call blueberry skins. Rich berry notes and there’s some tannic quality that reminds me of crab apples. Semi-sweet.

Mouthfeel: Semi-active, brightly tart without being sour, and a sweet finish at the back.

Overall: It’s good with a nice combination of flavors and sweet and tart.
