Latest print article: COBW SMaSH Fest and Brewers celebrating beer

Sunriver Brewing pouring at an event

My latest print article for the Bend Bulletin is out today, talking about Central Oregon Beer Week’s SMaSH Fest this weekend, and, in the spirit of celebrating beer, asking local brewers just what it is they love about beer. I’m always a fan of when brewers talk beer, and this was no exception.

However, one response got to me too late to add to the article, from Brett Thomas, head brewer of Sunriver Brewing, so I’m running his answers to my questions as a supplement here:

What do you love about beer? (Alternatively, Why do you love beer?)

What a deep question! The thing I love most about beer is the that it is the most approachable and accessible expression of craftmanship and science. Alternatively, I love beer for its depth of flavors and its overwhelming contribution to our culture, community and history.

Tell me about the SMaSH beer that will be pouring on Saturday.

We’re bringing back our favorite SMaSH beer this year – Flashback IPA. Flashback features UK grown Maris Otter pale malt and Mosaic hops. The Maris Otter provides a rich malt sweetness with notes of biscuits, crackers and honey. The malt backbone supports a big hop charge of four different forms of Mosaic hops (pellets, leaf, CO2 extract and Cryo pellets).

(That picture above doesn’t have anything in particular to do with SMaSH Fest or similar beers but is one I kind of like of Sunriver pouring at an event.)
