Beer list for the 10th annual Little Woody
The Little Woody Barrel-Aged Beer, Cider & Whiskey Festival begins in two days, and features 23 breweries and cideries pouring a variety of barrel-aged (and non-barrel-aged) beers and ciders. Of the wood-aged offerings it looks like a pretty strong list this year, and you can judge for yourself below.
Within the beers listed I’ve highlighted in bold the ones that are barrel-aged, and tried to indicate a base style and wood type if possible. You can find further descriptions on the respective pages here.
10 Barrel Brewing (Bend, OR)
- Sour Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout – blend of Russian imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with a sour raspberry beer – 9.5% ABV, 50 IBUs
- Redeux Strong Ale – 9.6% ABV, 55 IBUs
Avid Cider Company (Bend, OR)
- Blackberry Cider – 6.2% ABV
- Organic Dry Apple Cider – 5.8% ABV
Bend Brewing Company (Bend, OR)
- Collusion Delusion Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout – 10.5% ABV, 70 IBUs
- Razz Tafari Sour Ale
Boneyard Beer (Bend, OR)
- Rum Barrel Aged Suge Knite – imperial stout aged in second-use rum barrels – 13% ABV, 80 IBUs
- Bone-A-Fide Pale Ale – 5.5% ABV, 38 IBUs
Deschutes Brewery (Bend, OR)
- Black Butte XXX – 100% barrel-aged using 8 different varieties of oak barrels – 13.6% ABV, 40 IBUs
- The Ages – 100% aged in oak, blend of three different year vintages of gueuze-inspired sour ale – 8% ABV, 14 IBUs
Epic Brewing (Salt Lake City, UT)
- Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist – Whiskey and Rum barrel aged imperial stout with barrel aged coffee and coconut – 11.3% ABV, 20 IBUs
- Syrah Sour – wine foeder-aged sour, placed in casks with blueberry, boysenberry, and black currants – 8.5% ABV
- RiNo APA – American pale ale – 5.8% ABV, 40 IBUs
- Strawberry Rhubarb Sour – 8.5% ABV (*** unclear if this is barrel-aged)
Founders Brewing (Grand Rapids, MI)
- CBS – version of Kentucky Breakfast Stout, a coffee and chocolate imperial stout, aged in bourbon barrels that previously held maple syrup – 11.7% ABV, 45 IBUs
- Barrel Runner Mosaic Hopped Ale – rum barrel-aged imperial IPA – 11.1% ABV, 55 IBUs
- Backwoods Bastard – Scotch ale aged in bourbon barrels – 11% ABV
Fremont Brewing (Seattle, WA)
- The Rusty Nail 2018 – Imperial oatmeal stout aged 15 months in 12-year old bourbon barrels – 14.5% ABV, 40 IBUs
- Brother – Imperial IPA – 8.5% ABV, 1 billion IBUs
GoodLife Brewing (Bend, OR)
- Long Acronym – dry-hopped India pale lager aged in Oregon Pinot noir barrels with mixed-culture Brett – 7.8% ABV, 45 IBUs
- Give ’em Helles – German-style helles lager – 4.5% ABV, 20 IBUs
Hop Valley Brewing (Springfield, OR)
- Long Turkey Kiss Goodnight – Belgian tripel aged 4 months in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels – 10.2% ABV, 14.3 IBUs
- Bubble Stash Mosaic Cryo Hop Contemporary IPA – 6.2% ABV, 45 IBUs
Immersion Brewing (Bend, OR)
- Raven Rye’sn – strong dark rye ale; 5 months in a whiskey barrel – 8% ABV, 60 IBUs
- Wild Wood Saison – Saison aged in French oak with Brett yeast and apricot for 12 months – 6% ABV, 20 IBUs
Ninkasi Brewing (Eugene, OR)
- Cask Ground Control Bourbon Aged Imperial Stout – aged in Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon Barrels – 11% ABV, 50 IBUs
- Raspberry Lime Gose – sour wheat with coriander and sea salt, with fresh raspberries and lime – 4% ABV, 12 IBUs
Oakshire Brewing (Eugene, OR)
- Fruit Farm Pinot Noir – farmhouse ale blend aged 15 months in a number of barrels, then racked onto Iris Vineyards Pinot Noir grapes – 8% ABV, 8 IBUs
- Hazy IPA – 6.6% ABV, 50 IBUs
Ordnance Brewing (Boardman, OR)
- Ordnance Barley Wine 16 – Brewed on a leap year, “16” was aged in whiskey barrels for 16 months – 14.75% ABV
- Bloops Cousin – marionberry wheat beer – 4.6% ABV, 21 IBUs
Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider (Portland, OR)
- Viva La Pineapple! – 6% ABV
- Hallelujah Hopricot – 6.7% ABV
Silver Moon Brewing (Bend, OR)
- Dark Tranquility – 2016 Imperial Stout aged for 5 months in Crater Lake Rye barrels with licorice root, orange peel, & molasses – 10% ABV, 50 IBUs
- Boysen The Wood – Baltic Porter fermented with boysenberries, then aged 1⁄2 for one year in Crater Lake Rye barrels and the other 1⁄2 in Oregon Spirit Distillers Bourbon barrels before blending together – 8.5% ABV, 25 IBUs
Sunriver Brewing (Sunriver, OR)
- Barrel Aged Raging Willie Belgian Quad – with sweet cherries aged for 12 months in a mix of Buffalo Trace and Heaven Hills bourbon barrels – 12.5% ABV, 35 IBUs
- 6th Anniversary Double IPA – 8.6% ABV, 80 IBUs
The Ale Apothecary (Bend, OR)
- Sahalie – flagship ale, mixed-fermentation in wood, bottled 12/29/2017 – 9.45% ABV
- Ralph – mixed-fermentation ale brewed with white fir, aged over a year in Oregon Pinot noir barrels, bottled 3/2/2018 – 7.22% ABV
Three Creeks Brewing (Sisters, OR)
- Rye Whiskey Barrel-Aged Stampede Ale – English-style strong ale aged in rye whiskey barrels for 1 year – 10.6% ABV, 70 IBUs
- Stampede Ale – the base version – 9% ABV, 70 IBUs
Tumalo Cider Company (Tumalo, OR)
- Prickly Passion – prickly pear and passionfruit cider – 6.5% ABV
- Heirloom Bourbon Barrel – blend of organic heirloom apples aged in bourbon barrels for six months – 6.5% ABV
Wild Ride Brewing (Redmond, OR)
- Barrel Aged Force Stout – aged in Crater Lake Rye Whiskey barrels – 7.8% ABV, 55 IBUs
- Nut Crusher Peanut Butter Porter – 6% ABV, 18 IBUs
WildCraft Cider Works (Eugene, OR)
- Barrel Aged Kiwi Sour with Red Rose – Wine made from Willamette Valley kiwi berries aged in neutral American oak for 18 months, then blended with a cider made of the rare Green Dragon variety fermented with lactobacillus culture and wild yeasts – 6.9% ABV
- Elder Flower Quince – quince and elderflower cider – 7.5% ABV
Worthy Brewing (Bend, OR)
- Betty White – Imperial blonde aged 6 months in bourbon barrels finished aging with dark cherries and orange zest – 9.7% ABV, 31 IBUs
- Sport Pils – light-bodied pilsner – 4.8% ABV, 20 IBUs
So based on this list (current as of the morning of 8/29), I am counting a total of 49 beers and ciders, with 28 of those barrel- or wood-aged in some form.
