Schöfferhofer Watermelon Mint — a different direction for a radler

Schöfferhofer Watermelon Mint radler

When it comes to summertime beers, it’s hard to beat a radler for refreshing drinkability—if you don’t mind your beer blended with lemonade, soda, or other alcohol-free juice-like drink. Traditionally, radlers (and shandies) are mixed with a lemon-lime beverage, typically a soda or a lemonade. But the one I received from Schöfferhofer this summer takes a different direction—Watermelon Mint.

Schöfferhofer Watermelon Mint, the newest flavour sensation in our portfolio, brings a pure summer feeling! A refreshing blend of 50% sparkling Schöfferhofer Unfiltered Hefeweizen Beer and 50% Watermelon drink with natural mint flavor. It is the perfect combination of smooth bitter, sweet and sour and a touch of minty coolness.

It’s only 2.5% ABV (benefit of mixing 50/50 with another drink), and according to the website, it contains 38 calories per 100ml with 5.8 grams of carbs.

How does it taste?

Appearance: Reddish color with a tinge of gold; initial pour is clear. Good white head. Overall it’s rose colored (or I guess you could say watermelon juice-colored).

Smell: Minty with some sweet fruitiness, kind of like a pitcher of mint iced tea next to freshly cut watermelon—very summery! There’s a touch of watermelon Jolly Rancher candy as well.

Taste: Tangy-sweet note with an herbal minty fresh flavor and a bit of watermelon syrup. Spearmint? Not too strong in any particular flavor, and the beer component has a very light wheat profile. Summery, reminds me of sun tea.

Mouthfeel: Light, slightly tart with a sweet finish at the back. Crisp and finishes fairly clean, with a lingering minty-fresh impression.

Overall: There’s less watermelon than I’d expect, and the mint isn’t too strong (a good thing). It’s interesting and different.
