Sanitas Brewing Mama Peaches IPA

Sanitas Brewing Mama Peaches IPA

Boulder, Colorado-based Sanitas Brewing Company recently released a new specialty IPA, Mama Peaches IPA, which was brewed to celebrate the birth of Sanitas co-founder Michael Mimsic’s first child. Last month, before the COVID-19 restrictions hit, I received a six-pack of Mama Peaches as part of the PR roll-out with Sanitas’ new agency Meteorite PR.

I’ve been working through the beers since then (handy when we’re self-isolating), though I made my review notes shortly after receiving the beers to get the freshest experience.

Sanitas was new-to-me, and it’s always interesting and refreshing to learn about new breweries and sample their beers to get a perspective of what’s going on outside the immediate region. Here’s a blurb about Sanitas from the original press release:

Founded in 2013, Sanitas Brewing currently offers four year-round beers and more than 25 unique beers throughout the year, all available in their 9,500 square-foot taproom and patio, located in the shadow of the iconic Boulder Flatirons and Mount Sanitas, for which the brewery is named.

Co-founders Michael Memsic and Chris Coyne are each steeped in the history and heritage of brewing and formerly brewed for Boulder Beer. Together they have built Sanitas into a go-to destination for savvy Colorado beer drinkers looking to connect with friends or simply bask in the sun on the brewery’s three-season outdoor patio, which Denver-based Westword dubbed “like your best bud’s back yard … instantly welcoming and relaxing.”

The new year will see Sanitas focus not just on the exploration and development of new IPAs, Sours, and Lagers to its impressive roster of beers, but also to continue utilizing its unique space to bring together the Boulder community for educational opportunities and to celebrate a collective passion for beer and the outdoors.

Of course with pandemic precautions in place right now, Sanitas has moved to to-go beer pickup and delivery only. Hopefully they will be able to weather the storm.

This Mama Peaches IPA is brewed with peaches, along with a medley of Amarillo, Rakau, Summit, and Centennial hops, and comes in at 6% ABV with 35 IBUs.

Appearance: Copper-orange color with a light haze, going a bit dark towards amber colored. Head is off-white, gently creamy, and falls to a skiff after initial buildup. Decent legs.

Smell: Allium hops with a bit of resiny stem and a light kiss of peach/stonefruit. There’s some caramel malts behind the savory herbal hops, but it is that new world garlic green hoppiness that comes through for me.

Taste: Relatively mellow with a light peach juice flavor along with herbal and floral hop notes. A bit of mid-palate bitterness that’s got some garlic greens floating around in it. The savory hops cancel out any significant peach contribution, with just a light residual juiciness to my taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, with decent carbonation, a bitter finish that lingers with an herbal aftertaste.

Overall: Even though I taste allium flavors, I suspect those that do not will get more fruit juiciness in this IPA than I. All in all it’s a decent beer with a nice hop profile that’s been holding up well over the past month that I’ve been drinking it. If you’re in Boulder, consider calling in for to-go or delivery and see if there is any of this left.
