Oregon Beer News, 04/20/2017

Oregon BeerHappy 420 day! While not directly related to beer, a number of places have 420-themed tappings and events taking place today, if that is of interest to you. And plenty of other beer news if not! As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.

Belmont Station celebrates their Closing Ceremonies on their 20th anniversary today with some DIPAs for 4/20: “Lagunitas The Waldo’s Special Ale — the quintessential 4/20 beer. To make sure everyone has some in their hands at 4:20, we will tap the keg at 4:19. Hey! This obviously ain’t our first rodeo! Expect some fun giveaways from the Lagunitas folks too! Sixpoint Brewing will be joining the party with the 4/20 release of Puff, their hazy, unfiltered version of Resin that also is becoming a 4/20 tradition — so much so that Sixpoint will be giving away Puff rolling papers, perfect for stuffing with whatever you want to puff on while getting your Puff on! And, the fine folks at Laurelwood will be on site to help us release their always anticipated Megafauna Double IPA and sharing some great Laurelwood gear with fans!”

Portland’s Saraveza has a 420 tapping with Lagunitas as well: “The origination of 420 is somewhat up for debate, but the story that seems to float to the top, that appears to have the most legitimacy, is that of the Waldos. Here it is in a nutshell: In 1971, the Waldos (a group of high school boys) met regularly at 4:20 pm in the front courtyard of their school (San Rafael High) near a statue of Louis Pasteur. These treasure hunters would set out in a ‘66 Impala armed with a map and some doobies on a journey to find a secret pot garden near Point Reyes. They never did find the secret garden, but they kept looking. Thu. April 20th: This year, on 420 we celebrate all the treasure hunters as well as this national counter culture holiday. Do you celebrate 420? If so, do so with us – these beers are for you: Lagunitas The Waldos’ Special Ale IPA: The dankest and hoppiest beer ever brewed at Lagunitas (was made with the help of the original Waldos for all treasure hunters.) Coalition Two Flowers IPA: The first commercially produced Cannobid oil (CBD) Hemp infused beer in Oregon.”

McMenamins Kennedy School (Portland) has their Extra Credit beer tasting today from 5 to 7pm, featuring Super Ligero Mexican Lager: “Dreaming of sandy beaches and blue skies? This may not actually deliver you to Mexico but it’s pretty darn close. This dark Mexican Lager is light, crisp and the perfect refresher on a hot, sunny day. It has a solid, malty base and a light hop kick to round everything out. Salud!”

The Ram Brewery in Clackamas has a suitably-themed beer going on tap for the day: “Big Dread’s Organic IPA is back! Tapping on 4/20! It the nicest IPA we’ve brewed! See you soon!”

Freebridge Brewing (The Dalles): Today at 5pm they are holding the release of Cherry Heights for the Northwest Cherry Festival, a sour beer with (you guessed it) cherries: “Master Brewer Mike Boler has been waiting nearly a decade to to brew this fantastic traditional German wheat beer for you! “Cherry Heights” features Oregon tart cherries delivered by a delicately soured Weissbier. This beer is limited production brewed specifically for The Northwest Cherry Festival, so it won’t last long. Pair “Cherry Heights” with our special festival pie featuring Muleskinner Stout soaked Bing Cherries with a rediculous pile of bacon atop a base blend of cherry puree and ricotta cheese all adourned with a touch of mozzarella, green onions, flaked red pepper, and a honey drizzle.”
