McMenamins 23rd Avenue Bottle Shop

Today is Beer Can Appreciation Day, recognizing this day in 1935 when beer was first sold in cans. Celebrate by opening a canned beer today, for which Oregon has many! Here is also the other Oregon beer news for this Thursday, January 24; as usual I’ll be updating this post throughout the day so check back occasionally for the latest news.

McMenamins 23rd Avenue Bottle Shop (Portland): In celebration of the poet Robert Burns’ birthday tomorrow, the Bottle Shop is hosting a “Robbie Burns Night” Traquair House Tasting from 6 to 8pm: “Come celebrate the life of the great Scottish Bard Robbie Burns with a free sample of the Traquair House Ale, brewed in the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. Traquair operated a house brewery and when Mary Queen of Scots visited in 1566, Traquair was already brewing a famous strong ale. Sometime after 1800, brewing ceased at Traquair. The original brewery equipment remained on the estate, idle, until the 20th Laird of Traquair, Peter Maxwell Stuart, restored and opened the brewery in 1965. The copper brewkettle at Traquair is over 200 years old, and beer is made in the traditional manner — even using oak fermenting vessels, which contribute to the deep, unique character of these beers.”

The Bier Stein (Eugene) teams up with Block 15 Brewery to kick off its three-day Block 15 Bonanza today which is definitely something you’re going to want to check out: “Block 15 has opened up their cellar to us and we are so thrilled that we are hosting a 3 day event! These bottles are being released in very limited quantities across the state so be sure to show up each day to enjoy these carefully crafted and cellared beers! We are kicking off day 1 of the Block 15 Bonanza with Love Potion #9 on cask. We will also have cans of this decadent black raspberry chocolate stout to celebrate “Beer Can Appreciation Day” – marking the day that the first can of beer was sold in 1935. From 5-8pm make your way to our back bar space to enjoy some of Block 15’s finest wild ales and spin our prize wheel to win some swag! We will also feature 15 additional Block 15 beers on our primary draft lines.”

Bailey’s Taproom (Portland) is hosting a collaboration beer release for Nuts of Wrath tonight from 5 to 8pm: “Stop by this Thursday, January 24th, to be one of the first to taste a new collaboration between Grains of Wrath and Chuckanut! Last month these two breweries collaborated on a little known German style called Kulmbacher Export. Kulmbacher Export is a strong, dark, hoppy, lager which originated in Central Germany during the 19th century. Think imperial schwarzbier or strong, hoppy, dunkel. We will also be featuring some of our favorite standbys from each brewery. Cheers!”

Big news regarding Portland beer bar Saraveza broke last night, where I first saw it on Brewpublic: It has been sold to the owners of Portlands Roscoe’s! “After ten years running and operating Saraveza, owner Sarah Pederson has sold the beloved Wisconsin themed beer bar. The new owners are not new the bar business as it will be Jeremy Lewis and Quyen Ly, owners of Roscoe’s and Steinhaus, that will be taking over as the new owners. Saraveza recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in October 2018 and Sarah is now said to be ready to spend more time with her family. Jeremy told us via email, “We aren’t going to change anything, we plan on keeping all the staff and having it be business as usual.” We will miss seeing Sarah at Saraveza, but are glad to see that the bar will continue on and will be in good hands with Jeremy and Quyen.” The New School has the story here as well.
