McMenamins and Great Notion Brewing swap flagship recipes for a fun twist

McMenamins and Great Notion Brewing swap flagship recipes

So this is a fun one: McMenamins and Great Notion Brewing teamed up for a collaboration project but instead of the usual format, where the two breweries create a new beer together, they instead swapped flagship beer recipes and each brewery put its own twist on them.

McMenamins took Great Notion’s Ripe and created Cold as Ripe Cold Double IPA, while Great Notion started with Ruby Ale and finished with Ruby Jammin (though the email below calls it Jammin’ with Ruby).

Here are details from the marketing email I received:

How does it work?
On the McMenamins side, the Edgefield Brewery is taking Great Notion’s Ripe IPA – a New England hazy IPA and the brewery’s most-wanted recipe – and turning it into “Cold as Ripe Cold Double IPA,” a citrusy, tropical, cold double IPA coming in at 8% alc./vol.

For Great Notion, they’re tinkering with McMenamins’ Ruby Ale – a 30+ year-old recipe – and creating “Jammin’ with Ruby,” a sour heavily fruited with raspberries and a riff on their “Jammie Pants” series.

Both beers will give “same same, but different” vibes, for a uniquely NW mashup.

The fine print
Time to drink up? The beers will be available beginning Friday, January 28th at the following locations:

  • Cans ($5 each): Both the McMenamins and Great Notion versions will be available at select McMenamins locations.
  • McMenamins Cold as Ripe cans will be available at 9 locations: Edgefield, 23rd Ave Bottle shop, Cornelius Pass Roadhouse, Kennedy School, Cedar Hills Pub, Old St Francis School, Grand Lodge, Gearhart Hotel and Wilsonville Pub.
  • Great Notion’s Jammin with Ruby will be available at 5 McMenamins locations: Edgefield, Kennedy School, 23rd Ave Bottle Shop, Gearhart Hotel and Old St. Francis School. PLUS, it will be available directly from Great Notion Brewery.
  • On Tap- Every McMenamins (OR and Wash) will have a keg of both brews by 1/28. Get it while it lasts!

More of these types of collaborations, please!
