Diff’rent Smokes: Smoke Beer & BBQ Fest returns this weekend (October 14)

Diff'rent Smokes smoke beer fest 2023 flyer

The Diff’rent Smokes brewfest returns to Bend this Saturday, October 14, taking place this time around at GoodLife Brewing and featuring a variety of smoked beer styles. There will be 20 beers pouring at the fest, with proceeds benefitting the Oregon Volunteer Firefighters Association; tickets are available online for $20 or $25 at the door.

Earlier this week, organizer Brian Yaeger (Grand Craft Beer) hosted a media preview at GoodLife with a sneak peek at the taplist and poured several samples; I’ve posted a few photos below.

Here’s the press release with more details:

FESTIVAL OF RAUCHBIERS AND OTHER SMOKE BEERS BENEFITS OREGON VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION

Diff’rent Smokes returns with a wide range of beers made with smoked malts or other smoked ingredients. Before modern (as in the last 200 years) techniques allowed for malts to be kilned, all beers had an element of smoke since malts were dried over fire resulting in what the Germans call “rauchbier.” And nothing goes better with smoke beers than smoked meats, The festival takes place in the beer garden at GoodLife Brewing (70 SW Century Dr.) on Saturday, October 14 from 1 to 7 p.m. Tickets are now available online for $20 and will be $25 at the gate. Everyone is welcome, but the smoke beers will only be available to ticket holders. More info online at Bendticket.com/events/DiffrentSmokes.

Admission includes a souvenir glass and five (5) drink tickets for sample pours, while full-glass pours will require three tickets. Additional drink tickets will be available for $1 each.

From Bend breweries, attendees can look forward to an exotic smoked pumpkin curry beer from 10 Barrel, a historic Swedish farmhouse ale from The Ale Apothecary, a beer from Spider City made with cherrywood smoked malts as opposed to the more common beechwood smoked, a pair of classical, Bamberger-style smoked Märzens from Deschutes and McMenamins Old St. Francis, as well as tasty beers from Boss Rambler, Bridge 99, Cascade Lakes, Oblivion, and host GoodLife. From around Oregon, rauchbiers include a smoked apple lager from 1188 Brewing (in John Day), a smoked Helles (light beer) from Germanic lager specialists Heater Allen (in McMinnville), a Polish wheat beer from Steeplejack (in Portland), and a smoked porter from Tiger Town (in tiny Mitchell). From beyond Oregon, the event is honored to have special beers brought in from rauchbier’s homeland, Bamberg, in the case of Schlenkerla (established in 1408), Dovetail from Chicago, and Switchback from Vermont.

Diff’rent Smokes is a celebration of the end of our extreme wildfire season as well as a show of gratitude to our firefighters. A portion of proceeds will go to benefit the Oregon Volunteer Firefighters Assoc., established in 1957, to train volunteers.
