Avid Cider is expanding and this week announced its latest move—to Redmond. The company will be taking over the production brewery space currently occupied by Silver Moon Brewing; it’s a 15,000 square foot facility and will include much of the current equipment already there.

Both companies issued press releases this week about the news, starting with Avid:

Avid Cider announced today that they will be relocating their production facility to Redmond, Oregon. The move comes as part of Avid’s ongoing expansion efforts as a result of the 2022 partnership with Blake’s Hard Cider of Michigan. The Redmond production facility is currently occupied by Silver Moon Brewing, with the transition expected to be completed by November 2023. Avid Cider will take over the existing 15,000 square foot production facility in Redmond, which includes a sizable tank farm to produce exciting new products.

“We’re so excited to move into a fantastic new production facility,” said Avid Cider’s CEO and Co-Founder, Samantha Roberts. “This move will allow us to increase our production capacity and continue to meet the growing demand for our ciders and Seven Peaks Seltzer brand. We look forward to working with the team at Silver Moon Brewing to ensure a smooth transition and continued success.” she continued. Avid plans to keep all current production employees and will plan to hire additional roles within the company as operations expand.

The facility changes come at a perfect time for both organizations as Avid looks to ramp up production capabilities and as Silver Moon focuses on better synergy and efficiencies with operations at a single location. “Transitioning into a 15,000 sq ft production facility will not only expand our capacity, but it allows us to elevate our quality, streamline efficiencies, and amplify our overall production at Avid Cider Co.” said Avid Cider’s Operations Manager, Scott Krug. “This will allow us to continue producing our high-quality cider for not only our friends and followers in Central Oregon, but the Pacific Northwest and beyond.” he continued.

The transition is expected to be completed by November of this year. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This will move Avid out of its space in Bend on Wilson Avenue, though the taproom in the Box Factory will remain.

The unexpected and interesting part of this news is that Silver Moon Brewing is scaling back its operations, pulling out of its 30-barrel production brewery that opened in 2015, to consolidate back at its Bend brewpub, which has a capacity of 10 barrels.

Here is the press release issued by Silver Moon:

Silver Moon Brewing announced today a consolidation of the two brewing facilities that it has operated in for the past eight years. The consolidation will have Bend’s Avid Cider taking over the Redmond facility as a result of the 2022 partnership with Blakes Hard Cider of Michigan. Silver Moon notes the consolidation of the two brewing facilities as a direct path to improved efficiencies and an enhanced focus on regional distribution.

Under the new arrangement, Silver Moon Brewing will continue brewing and growing distribution throughout the western United States by leveraging and expanding the original production facility in Downtown Bend. “The Bend facility currently allows for a good deal of capacity, and with some simple additions of tanks and equipment, provides us upside in what we’re able to produce for both the Oregon market and the additional states we currently distribute to” said James Watts, co-owner of the brewery.

“We’re thrilled to be turning the keys over to Avid Cider, it’s been a fantastic facility for us, and allowed for our own growth and several contract brewing partnerships over the years” said Matt Barrett, Silver Moon Brewing’s co-owner. “With a lease renewal approaching, we had to make a multi-year decision, and this arrangement allows us to focus on our core strengths while also continuing to grow our distribution throughout the western United States. We’ve maintained two facilities for nearly 8 years, including the COVID era, and consolidating operations this year will lead to countless benefits for the business overall.”

The transition is expected to be completed by November of this year. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

There’s a bit more detail in this Bulletin article, including the statistic that Silver Moon is producing about 5,000 barrels of beer per year (down from about 7,000 pre-covid).
