Advent Beer Calendar 2023: Day 10: Ayinger Winter Bock

Today is National Lager Day, celebrating the world’s number one style of beer, so what could be more fitting than selecting a lager for today’s Advent calendar beer? And when I think of lager, Germany is the first country that comes to mind; over the years I’ve never picked a beer by one of my favorites German breweries, Ayinger Privatbrauerei. So I’ve selected Ayinger Winter Bock for today’s featured beer.

We only serve this dark, chestnut brown Doppelbock between November and the end of January. The complex three-mash process, the use of four types of malt and a storage time of 16 weeks ensure the rounded, full-bodied, malt-dominant taste.

Despite a high original wort content, the sweetness that is often heavy in Doppelbocks is hardly noticeable. The initial taste is mildly full with an accompanying coffee tone that dominates the aftertaste. A true taste experience for winter evenings with candlelight and a fireplace!

With 6.7% alcohol by volume, Winter Bock is a hearty offering, fit for the season, and a rich and malty lager that’s a terrific choice to toast to National Lager Day. Cheers!
