I wanted to support Ukraine and include a Ukrainian Christmas beer on the Beer Advent Calendar this year, and after searching online I settled on one from the Lviv Brewery—Lviv Christmas, or Lvivske Rizdvyane in Ukrainian.

Lviv Christmas is a 4.4% ABV dark lager brewed with Christmas spices; the (translated) description from the website says:

“Lviv Christmas” is a dark beer with a caramel-spicy aroma and a hint of Christmas spices, which has long been brewed at the Lviv Brewery before the winter holidays. Lviv brewers treated dear guests and numerous carolers who came to wish them a Merry Christmas. Now this special beer is available to everyone, but only during the Christmas holidays.

Lviv Brewery was founded by monks in 1715 and today is part of the Carlsberg Group under Carlsberg Ukraine. The brewery offers a range of brews including a variety of lagers, Baltic porter, wheat (and wit) beers, and more, including one with the intriguing name “Intoxicating Goblet,” a strong fruit beer (cherry).

Now is a great time to support not just Lviv Brewery but all breweries in Ukraine, especially as we are entering the holidays. If you can buy Ukrainian beer for Christmas, do so and be sure to get extra as gifts for the beer lovers in your life!
