Advent Beer Calendar 2020: Day 11: Big Muddy Brewing Winter Ale

Today’s Advent pick comes from Murphysboro in southern Illinois, through which the Big Muddy River lazily winds its way before joining up with the Mississippi River, and the Big Muddy Brewing Company, which has been crafting a variety of beers since 2009. Among the brewery’s offerings is its annual Winter Ale, a spiced dark ale that clocks in at 6% ABV.

Brewed only during the cold months of the year, this medium-bodied winter warmer is balanced with roasted malt complexity and subtle hints of cinnamon, ginger and vanilla creating an inviting and festive ale that is the perfect accompaniment for any holiday occasion.

Big Muddy has themed itself after the legend of the Big Muddy Monster, a mysterious creature that was spotted in Murphysboro in the 1970s. The brewery’s version looks a bit like Sasquatch, and for the Winter Ale label the Big Muddy Monster is sporting a Santa hat and carrying a sack full of (presumably) Big Muddy beer.

It’s a spice-forward ale that may well have you thinking of gingerbread or possibly even holiday fruitcake, and will be a nice beer to open up when the snow is coming down.
