Advent Beer Calendar 2019: Day 19: Double Mountain Fa La La La La

Double Mountain Brewery Fa La La La La Winter Ale

On this day in 1843, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was published, telling the Christmas ghost story of Ebenezer Scrooge’s visit by the spirits of Christmas. Riffing on the “carol” portion of the title, today’s Advent pick reminds me of Christmas carols: Fa La La La La Winter Ale from Oregon’s Double Mountain Brewery.

Fa La La La La is an old school IPA with a solid and welcome backbone of bitterness, full of piney, resinous hops. It’s a classic interpretation of the style that is just right for the time of the year. I found it to be a lovely hop bomb that runs the gamut in flavor from hop bitterness to green, spicy, herbal, and minty.

Not every winter beer needs to be dark. In this spirit, we bring you great tidings of joy with this year’s Fa La La La La. Centennial hops take the reins with evergreen and bright citrus, with resounding choruses of Pilsner and Crystal malts echoing in the refrain. This Winter IPA is full and rounded, delightfully aromatic, and as crisp as a bluebird winter morning. The body has enough weight to warm chilled bones after a day out in the cold.

This winter IPA is 7.5% alcohol by volume and 85 IBUs and is sure to have you singing “Deck the Halls” and other carols this Christmas. No Scrooge needed!
