Oregon Beer News, 11/09/2016

Well… the day after. Not the outcome I was expecting, which I expect is true of most of you. At least we still have beer. Here’s the news in Oregon beer for Wednesday, November 9; as usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often for updates. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.

Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland): Today’s the big release day for HUB’s big holiday/winter beers: Kentucky Christmas and Noggin Floggin Barleywine, and they are celebrating from 5 to 7pm at their main pub. “2016 Kentucky Christmas begins as Organic Abominable Winter Ale, Hopworks’ most popular seasonal offering, and is aged for 10-13 months in a variety of bourbon barrels. We only bottled 1100 bottles of “KY Xmas” so grab it early before it disappears! Organic Noggin Floggin Barleywine is a big winter warmer, deep mohagany in color, that boasts of rich toffee and toasted malt character, with flavors of fig and plum, and resinous hops. 1500 bottles were made and will disappear quickly.” Both beers will be on tap at the pubs and in limited distribution in bottles.

McMenamins Thompson Brewery (Salem) has their “Savor in Salem” beer tasting today from 3 to 6pm, featuring Calico Jack Porter: “Calico Jack. He was quite a character and the creator of a famous image that we tie to Pirate ships to this day. In his honor, we brewed a Robust Porter with unique notes of warm peppers, rum and American Oak. The peppers create a soft kick to the back of the palate, while rum and Oak notes fill the sails with classic flavors that will go down in Pirate history.” Yes, please.

Gilgamesh Brewing (Salem): Just a bit over a week ago the 2016 edition of their The Terry Porter was released and is available now. Together with Columbia Distributing, Gilgamesh is donating $1 from every bottle, $20 from every ½ barrel keg, and $9 from every 1/6 barrel keg sold to the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Belmont Station (Portland): Tonight they are hosting a release party for “Supergeil,” a collaboration beer between Widmer Brothers and Wayfinder Beer: “We are super excited to help the brew teams from both Widmer — one of Portland’s venerable original breweries — and Wayfinder — one of the newest breweries in the city — release their collaboration, called Supergeil! Here’s what they have to say about their collaborative concoction: ‘Supergeil is the German word for “Super Cool or Super Sexy,” made famous by Edeka German grocery store commercials. This beer is a collaborative take between Widmer and Wayfinder on Festbier. It’s Supergeil!'” The fun takes place from 5 to 7pm.

Sunriver Brewing: Today at their Sunriver Pub they are holding a fundraising “Craft for a Cause” day donating $1 from every pint sold to the United Way of Deschutes County. “Sunriver Brewing Company and United Way of Deschutes County present CRAFT FOR A CAUSE. For every pint sold on Nov. 9th the Sunriver Brewing Company in Sunriver will donate $1 to support United Way’s mission.” Go do your part!

The Green Dragon (Portland): Tonight’s Green Dragon Brew Crew release is featuring a Russian Imperial Stout dubbed Descent into Darkness: “The Green Dragon Brew Crew is a small dedicated group of brewers who work hard every week to bring the brewing public many styles of superior craft beers. Tonight, in celebration of our seventh anniversary of brewing at the Green Dragon, we are releasing our last keg of our barrel aged Russian imperial Stout made in mid-December, 2014. As fans of our beers know, this huge RIS is big, bold, smooth and delicious. For sure, the two year cellaring has mellowed and melded the intense flavors resulting in a smooth rich bourbon barrel experience. Please join us at the Green Dragon to celebrate the seventh anniversary release of Descent Into Darkness.” The keg is tapped at 5pm and they’ll talk about the beer at 6.

Bend Brewing‘s Dozen Days of Drafts continues today with Locals Day pricing on Elk Lake IPA, one of the brewpub’s staple beers and a tasty one to boot!

And in Eugene, the Tap and Growler is wrapping up their Great Tap & Growler Beer Fest today, featuring Oregon GABF medals winners on tap and tonight from 6 to 8pm they are hosting Pelican Brewing for a tasting. They will be pouring Kiwanda Cream Ale, Doryman’s Brown, Pelicano Lager, Tsunami Stout on nitro, and Fuggles Yeah! IPA.

And, Pelican announced today that they won medals at the European Beer Star competition. From the press release: “Pelican Brewing Company today received a Gold medal for its popular flagship brew Kiwanda Cream Ale in the prestigious European Beer Star competition at BrauBeviale in Nuremberg. The brewery also earned two Bronze medals for its new Beak Breaker Imperial India Pale Ale and MacPelican’s Wee Heavy Ale. With 2,103 beer entries from 44 countries, the competition for one of the most sought-after prizes in the international brewing world received a record number of entries making Pelican’s three notable awards all the more impressive.”

Ecliptic Brewing (Portland): Their new beer is out today! “Today is the day we have all been waiting for, the official launch of Starburst IPA! Originally brewed for PDX Beer Week Masters of IPA, this beer quickly became one of our most requested beers. Starburst IPA is tropical and juicy, brewed with Amarillo, Azacca, Centennial, Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops. Starburst IPA is now available on draft every 6 weeks in the pub and throughout the Ecliptic Brewing footprint.”

Immersion Brewing (Bend) posted today: “The Heat Wave White IPA is now back on tap!” Get on down to check it out.
