Oregon Beer News, 08/16/2012

Oregon BeerFor some reason I keep thinking today is Friday, maybe because of all the beer things going on? But it’s only Thursday so that means two more days this week of Oregon beer news! As usual I’ll be periodically updating this post with news as I dig it up, so check back often to see the latest. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get it updated.

Today is the start of the 9th annual Bend Brewfest down here in (duh!) Bend! It runs from today through Saturday, 3 to 11pm today and Friday and noon to 11 on Saturday. There are 51 breweries represented, and in addition to the two beers each brewery is pouring, there are also X-taps that many have also brought something special and/or limited. See my earlier write-up for the other details, and then get yourself down here to Bend for the weekend! It’s going to be great!

Golden Valley Brewery (McMinnville and Beaverton) has their new 20 Mile Extra Pale Ale release going on today at both locations—this is the ultra-local beer (the first in their three “Harvest Series”) where all of the ingredients were all sourced within 20 miles of the brewery: “The Hops used in the beer come from Coleman Farms located near Woodburn, OR. The Barley was grown and malted at Christenson Farms just outside McMinnville and the Yeast is a Golden Valley House Ale Strain.”  At both brewery locations, the kegs will be tapped at 5pm, and pints will be $2 until the first keg blows at each—a great deal! And as a bonus, at the McMinnville brewery, you can meet the farmer: “Zack Christensen is the Farmer who grew and malted the Barley for the “20 Mile” Extra Pale Ale! Zack will be joining us during our “20 Mile” RELEASE today from 3-6pm!” Be sure to try this one out!

Deschutes Brewery (Portland Pub) has their third annual Street Fare event going on tonight from 5 to 9pm, where they close the block in front of their Portland Pub and partner with a number of food carts to offer specialty plates paired with Deschutes beers, and live music. They’ve partnered with 7 food carts, and will have 3 live bands for the evening and is a lot of fun. It’s all-ages and cash-only as well, so plan accordingly.

California’s Firestone Walker is in Bend tonight, with rep Travis Widdifield on hand with “Double Jack IPA 9.5%, their DBA double barrel ale 5%, and their Wookey Jack 8.3%” and he’ll be holding a tasting at the Broken Top Bottle Shop from 4 to 6pm, and then over at the Platypus Pub for another tasting from 6:30 to 8:30 (where the Platypus will tap a firkin of the Double DBA). If you’re a Firestone Walker fan you’d better get on it!

Deschutes Brewery reveals the new Jubelale bottle and label today on Facebook here: “Trying out the first run of Jubelale in bottles this week for a release in late September or early October. How do you like the label? Bend Artist Kaycee Anseth took previous Jubelale Ale labels and cut them into tiny pieces to create the artwork.” From what I see I really like it!
