Oregon Beer News, 03/04/2015

Oregon BeerDogs and recording studios—that’s how the beer news starts today for this Wednesday, March 4. Here’s that news and more; as usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often for updates. Full Sail Brewing (Hood River) is teaming up with Portland’s The EastBurn for a special vintage stout tasting and fundraising event dubbed “Stouts and Snouts” this Saturday, March 7: “Here’s a rare opportunity to sample 7 consecutive years of Full Sail’s Bourbon Barrel Aged vintages and benefit a great cause. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will even be a Puppy Kissing Booth! Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door the day of the event. For your ticket you will receive 5 tokens which will be redeemable for tastings and/or adorable puppy kisses. Additional tokens will be available for $1 each. All kissing booth proceeds, silent auction and adoption fees will benefit Oregon Humane Society. OHS puppies will be available for adoption.” It runs from 7 to 10pm Saturday.

This was some unusual news that came through last week: Eugene’s Ninkasi Brewing is opening their own in-house recording studio. From the press release: “Ninkasi Brewing Company believes crafted, independent beer and music is a winning combination. Since the beginning Ninkasi has supported local artists in a variety of ways, all organized by James Book, Ninkasi brand and experiential marketing director. With the opening of its new Ninkasi Studios this past June, the brewery announces its first original musical offering— the “Dawn of the Red Compilation EP,” available on Ninkasi’s website this March.” An interesting development for a brewery to take, one I wouldn’t have guessed. Keep an eye out on their website for the free download of their Dawn of the Red Compilation.

There is a new book out by Oregon author Robert Wright: The Brass: It’s a bit of England where good companionship is the order of the day, a history of Portland’s venerable Horse Brass Pub. Tonight there is a reading and book signing at the Rogue Ales Public House in northwest Portland, from 5 to 8pm with free admission and Younger’s Special Bitter on tap. The Brass is “the story of the birth and growth of a world-famous public house” and features interviews with a number of long-time figures in the Oregon beer scene that have helped shape the Horse Brass over the years. News on another Craft Brewers Conference collaboration beer being brewed this morning, this time by Central Oregon breweries—and one I’d definitely be very interested in! Deschutes Brewery, Worthy Brewing, Three Creeks Brewing, and McMenamins Old St. Francis School teamed up to brew an “Indigenous Berliner Weisse” and Deschutes posted details on Facebook this morning: “Here in Central Oregon, there is a great camaraderie among craft brewers & we’re very excited to… create a collaboration beer that you’ll be able to find in bottles if you’re attending the Craft Brewers Conference in Portland this year. [The brewers] will be creating a dry hopped, tart, indigenous Berlinerweiss with added juniper, spruce & white fir. We’re calling Chucklehead!”

And Worthy Brewing has a new small-batch beer on tap now: “Tropic Thunder IPA is the newest on tap from the Heart and Soul Series! This juicy beer was brewed with Sorachi Ace, Belma, and Azacca hops, adding flavors of tangerine, mango, and passion fruit.”

Attention homebrewers! Astoria’s Fort George Brewery is seeking your homebrewed beer entries for their annual Homebrewer’s Dinner next month. Due date is in a couple of weeks: “Your homebrews are needed for the annual Fort George Homebrewer’s Dinner. Samples are due Friday, March 20th – deliver two bottles of each variety to Hop-N-Grape in Longview, F.H. Steinbart’s in Portland, or Fort George Brewery in Astoria. Selected beers will be chosen and paired with one of five-courses at the Fort George Homebrewer’s Dinner on April 22nd. Chosen homebrewers will receive an honored seat at the table.” This would be cool to have your beer win and served!

The Green Dragon (Portland): They have their weekly Green Dragon Brew Crew release tonight: “Tonight the Green Dragon Brew Crew & guest brewer Chris Hummert introduce: Toasted Pecan Brown Ale. Brewed using 5lbs of house-roasted pecans, it’s like having beer and baked goods in one tasty glass. ABV – 5.3%”
