Oregon Beer News for Tuesday, January 26, 2021

It’s a late start to a chilly week, but here is the news roundup in Oregon beer for this Tuesday, January 26. Keep an eye on this post for updates through the rest of the afternoon, as I’ll be updating with news as I find it.

Oakshire recalls bulging cans

The big news of the comes from Eugene’s Oakshire Brewing, which issued a voluntary recall of cans of its latest “Theme from the Bottom” pastry sour series:

Oakshire Brewing is conducting a voluntary recall of Theme From the Bottom: Mango Raspberry Cheesecake Smoothie Sour Ale (Theme Mango Cheesecake). Today we became aware of an issue with our January 16th release of Theme Mango Cheesecake in 16oz cans. There are visible signs of refermentation in some of these cans causing the can to bulge and/or burst. This beer does not meet Oakshire’s quality standards and, as a precaution, we are alerting consumers of the issue. This beer was only sold through our taprooms in 16oz can packages from January 16, 2021 through January 18, 2021 with the majority of the cans sold online via pre-sale. All consumers who purchased this beer have been emailed a copy of this press release. No other Oakshire Brewing beers are affected by this recall.

Consumers: If you have Theme Mango Cheesecake in your possession, please do not open it. Do not attempt to transport or ship it. Do not attempt to return it. And do not remove the cans from the plastic holders. Dispose of the product by following these steps: (i) Before disposing of any cans of Theme Mango Cheesecake, please put on protective gloves and a face shield (or goggles and a mask); (ii) Place all remaining Theme Mango Cheesecake cans in a closed box and place immediately in a secured garbage container or dumpster outside. Oakshire is proud of its innovative beers and is particularly proud of the Theme From the Bottom series. Unfortunately, in this instance, we missed the target. If you drank the Theme Mango Cheesecake prior to reading this release, either in 16oz cans or on draft in one of Oakshire’s two taprooms, there is absolutely no danger and no cause for concern.

Fort George Brewery releases latest Skies of Wonder

Astoria’s Fort George Brewery is releasing its latest Skies of Wonder series beer this week, Gett Off. These are hazy imperial IPAs brewed with rotating hops, and according to the brewery, “This batch was brewed with generous amounts of Motueka, Strata, Amarillo, and Sabro hops.”

Update: More details from this Facebook post:

Skies of Wonder: Gett Off will be released this Wednesday 1/27 in its’ color-changing 16oz 4-packs from Fort George and showing up all over the Pacific Northwest in the next week. This one is also available for shipping anywhere in OR/WA from our website.

Wintertime stouts from Rogue

Rogue Ales has dark beers for you as winter settles in further, with the release of five stouts in its new packaging and lineup:

On shelves this season are Rogue’s notorious Chocolate Stout Nitro, award-winning Shakespeare Stout with a nitro twist, the, 2021 Rolling Thunder Imperial Stout, 2021 Rolling Thunder Imperial Stout finished in Chipotle Whiskey Barrels and the much-anticipated Double Chocolate Stout in a new 16-ounce can format.

Watching the winter weather advisories and snow coming, it’s a good time for a stout.

New beers list

Here’s a list of new beers out or coming out this week from different breweries (in addition to Fort George and Rogue listed above):

  • Von Ebert Brewing (Portland): Alemanian Pils in cans made a “comeback” this week: “Rather than blending base malts like we did for Pils, We used one single base malt for Alemanian Pils. With the hops, we selected Tettnang and Hallertau Select hops to push the herbal notes forward more, while also maintaining a nice, citrusy undertone!”
  • Bevel Craft Brewing (Bend): Iron Leaf Double IPA is now on tap, in time for today’s Locals Day: “This double IPA starts off with an aromatic blast of bright, citrusy, orange notes. Then when all seems sweet and easy-drinking this beer’s bitter finish and ABV lay the smack-down.”
  • Baerlic Brewing (Portland): Bright Thoughts – IPA is available for presale: “Bright Thoughts – IPA is brewed with a 50/50 blend of wheat and pilsner malts, Citra, Mosaic, Strata and Chinook hops and happy helpings of optimism, positivity and merriment!”

Level Beer retiring its “Suit Series” beers (inspired by the previous administration)

Portland’s Level Beer announced that with the passing of the previous presidential administration, the “Suit Series” of beers will be retired. (It’s time.)

As we transition into a new year (and new administration), we will be retiring our “Suit Series” of can labels. While we’ve loved the creativity throughout this series, we know it’s time for the next (marketing) campaign to take over.

Make sure to swing by and snag a 4-pack of the final cans from this series: Bad Hombre Mexican Lager, All I Do Is Win Hazy IPA and I’d Like A Mulligan Hazy IPA are all still available at both of our taprooms!
