This weekend Seattle’s Elysian Brewing‘s Great Pumpkin Beer Festival returns for its 9th annual showing, bringing a huge selection of pumpkin beers—they will be pouring something like 64 pumpkin beers at one time!—across three six-hour sessions over three days, starting tomorrow. Of course the October beer in Elysian Brewing‘s 12 Beers of the Apocalypse series is going to be a pumpkin beer—but because it’s part of this year-long series of unique beers leading up to the end of the Mayan long count calendar (which some are calling the Mayan apocalypse), it’s also a pumpkin beer with a twist: brewed with brown sugar and “fiery Vietnamese cinnamon” along with the pumpkin. At the beginning of the year Seattle’s Elysian Brewing announced a unique series of “apocalypse beers” to be released each month on the 21st leading up to December 21st—the end of the Mayan long count calendar and long heralded as the end of the world by that reckoning (the so-called “Mayan Apocalypse”). Breweries with beers themed for the apocalypse

Because it is the year 2012 and it is popularly held as the year of the (Mayan) Apocalypse, at least two breweries so far are releasing apocalyptic-themed beers: Seattle’s Elysian Brewing and Portland’s Cascade Brewing.
