Advent Beer Calendar 2015: Day 14: Port City Tidings Ale

For today’s Beer Advent Calendar pick, I selected the Great American Beer Festival “Small Brewing Company and Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year” winner, Port City Brewing out of Alexandria, Virginia. Their “not your typical” holiday ale is a Belgian-style blonde ale named Tidings Ale. Tidings Ale is a strong and spicy Belgian style blond ale brewed with local Maryland wildflower honey and Virginia wheat. These special ingredients store away the flavor and essence … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2015: Day 13: Pike Auld Acquaintance

For today’s Advent beer pick I’ve selected a beer from a brewery that (surprisingly, to me) I had not featured before in ten years of doing this calendar: Pike Brewing out of Seattle, Washington, established in 1989 beneath the famous Pike Place Market. Their annual “Hoppy Holiday Ale” takes its name from the song Auld Lang Syne: Pike Auld Acquaintance. This year’s version is a tribute to the late Beer Hunter, Michael Jackson. Pike Auld Acquaintance is … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2015: Day 12: St. Bernardus Christmas Ale

Honestly, when it comes to Christmas beers, it’s hard to get much better than the Belgian traditions and I always comes back to including some of the classics in each year’s Beer Advent Calendar. St. Bernardus Christmas Ale is a dark seasonal brewed in the classic ‘Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2015: Day 11: Brooklyn Winter Ale

For today’s Advent beer pick I’ve gone a little old school and selected a beer from New York’s Brooklyn Brewery: their Brooklyn Winter Ale. This is a rich, Scottish-style ale brewed to 6.1% abv with a malt bill that just sounds delicious: Scottish Floor-malted Maris Otter, English crystal malts, Belgian Aromatic malt, American roasted malts, and American oats. When winter brings you darkness and cold, Brooklyn Winter Ale is there to help you shake off the … Continue reading →

Advent Beer Calendar 2015: Day 10: Carlsberg Tuborg Julebryg

For today’s Advent beer pick we head over to Denmark to the not inconsiderable Carlsberg Group, which brews a Christmas beer under one of their brands, Tuborg Julebryg, that has grown into quite an annual affair! The beer itself is a 5.6% abv Pilsner, and is described as: Tuborg Christmas brew is a dark golden beer with notes of English liquorice. The taste is rich and full sweetness. And it lends itself naturally excellent for a … Continue reading →
