Barleywine Week: Stone Old Guardian (2010)

You can’t really talk about Barleywines without talking about another San Diego standard: Stone Old Guardian. I first reviewed this back in 2007, and it’s interesting to note that each year’s vintage has a slightly different alcohol content: the 2007 was 11.26%, while this 2010 bottle indicates 11.1%. And the 2011 edition, according to their site, will be 11.3%. Simply put: Old Guardian is one of the best American Barleywines out there. I guarantee that … Continue reading →

Barleywine Week: Past reviews

I drink my fair share of Barleywines, and while not all of them make it online, I’ve amassed a number of reviews over the years. A sweep through past blog entries highlights those that did make it online: Deschutes Mirror Mirror (2005), which I reviewed when I hosted The Session back in February ’08. Mirror Mirror 2009 Redhook’s Treblehook Barley Wine Shipyard Barley Wine Anchor Old Foghorn (which I reviewed during “Big Beer Week”, sort … Continue reading →

Barleywine Week: Green Flash Barleywine

The beer I’m reviewing today comes from one of the San Diego breweries that is known for the big San Diego-style hopping I’ve talked about before: Green Flash Brewing Barleywine Style Ale. This is a big, nearly 11% ABV beer that hits all the high marks for hopheads and strong beer, er, heads alike. Our American-style Barleywine undergoes a three hour boil to intensify the caramel malts and the enormous Pacific Northwest hop charge. The … Continue reading →

Barleywine Week: Old Boardhead Barleywine (2010 Reserve)

In the pantheon of Pacific Northwest Barleywines, I consider Full Sail Brewing‘s Old Boardhead to be near the top of the class. First brewed in 1990, the 2010 Reserve edition celebrates its 20th release with a new label (previous labels were distinctive though plain) and two decades of perfecting the recipe. Full Sail’s description: A deliciously rich barleywine that has spectacular depth and delicacy of flavor that is deep and robust. Its strong, sweet body … Continue reading →

Barleywine Week: Rudyard’s Rare Barleywine

Hale’s Ales, out of Seattle, brewed a “Special Limited Edition Release” Barleywine they called Rudyard’s Rare. According to the bottle, this was released in December 2007, which would make this a three-year-old beer; finding it at Whole Foods for $2.99 (for a 12-ounce bottle) makes that quite a good deal. The beer itself is 9.2% alcohol by volume. I don’t know if there is going to be another brewing of Rudyard’s Rare, or if the … Continue reading →
