St. Patrick’s Day beer in Bend

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and (partially) at the behest of a reader, I’m compiling a list of the appropriately-themed beers from Bend’s various breweries. Of course, an Irish-themed holiday usually calls for Stout, so I’ve listed each brewery’s house Stout (if they have one)—but of course, it’s the seasonals we’re after as well.

Update: BBC also has Irish Stout, according to their Facebook post today.

Deschutes Brewery

  • Obsidian Stout: “Obsidian Stout is as black as the nearby volcanic flow from which it gets its name. It’s a deep and satisfying experience, with distinct notes of chocolate, espresso, roasted malt and black barley. It is robust and full, with a big roasted finish.” 6.4% ABV
  • Chocolate Stout: Seasonal on tap now.
  • Irish Red Ale: This will be tapped on St. Patrick’s Day.

Bend Brewing

  • Oatmeal Stout: One of their current seasonals, on tap now.
  • Green Golden: On St. Patrick’s Day itself, BBC honors the age-old tradition of coloring beer green—okay, maybe not “age-old” but it’s fun nonetheless. They’ll be greening up their Metolius Golden Ale for the day.
  • Irish Stout: Mentioned this one on their Facebook page.

Silver Moon Brewing

  • O’Seanigan’s Irish Red: “3 years ago one of our favorite customers, Sean, started requesting an Irish Red. Sean’s an avid homebrewer and has a special place in his heart for Irish Reds. As we were working out our long term brew schedule we plugged a good Irish Red into the mix. While fine tuning the recipe and slating the brew date Sean was getting antsy. When our brewers took their shift beer in our taproom Sean would saunter over to them and inquire on the Reds progress. His persistence was admirable. When the brewers saw him coming they’d duck and mumble “Oh Sean again.” So, when we DID brew our delicious Irish Red we had to name it in his honor!”

Cascade Lakes

  • “Green Blonde”: Similar to Bend Brewing, Cascade Lakes is planning on greening up their Blonde Bombshell for the day.

McMenamins Old St. Francis School

  • McMenamins Irish Stout: “This is our Saint Patrick’s Day Seasonal and will pour exclusively on our ‘Nitro’ taps the entire month of March.  McMenamins Irish Stout is our interpretation of the internationally renowned beer style that originated in Ireland and was popularized by legendary brewing institutions, such as Guinness, Murphy’s and Beamish.” 4.9% ABV
  • Rosy Stout: This is a special Irish Stout with raspberries added (I believe it’s the Irish, though it could be Terminator). I had a couple of pints of this last weekend and rather enjoyed it.
  • Terminator Stout: Of course.

10 Barrel

  • O’Reilly’s Irish Red Ale: “Amber-Red color with an off-white head. Light, clean malty aroma with slight fruity esters. No hop aroma. Light-bodied mouth feel. A malt focused beer with a dry, grainy character. Not sweet, but surprisingly crisp & dry with just enough hop bitterness to balance the malt. An easy drinking, low-alcohol session beer.” 4.4% ABV

Boneyard Beer

  • No brewed-for-St.-Patty’s-Day seasonals, though they have a whopping 15% Russian Imperial Stout that they will put on tap in the tasting room that day.

Three Creeks Brewing

  • St. Patio’s Irish Stout (on Nitro). On tap at Three Creeks in Sisters, and the only Bend tap will be at Velvet, downtown, for $3 a pint.

The Old Mill Brew Werks

The Abbey Pub

  • Not a brewery, but Geoff does have Murphy’s Irish Stout on nitro right now.

The Blacksmith

  • Also not a brewery, but they have Moylan’s Dragoons Dry Irish Stout on nitro tap right now, as well as Oakshire‘s Overcast Espresso Stout.
