Snake Dog IPA

Snake Dog IPASnake Dog IPA was one of the first bottles I picked up at the Brew Shop here in Bend, after they’d expanded into a bottle shop as well as a homebrew supply store. It was a Flying Dog beer that I hadn’t seen before—I don’t know if it was new or just new to Bend.

No matter, Flying Dog does good beers so I picked it up. It’s an American IPA, hopped up good and 7.1% alcohol by volume. They call it their “hop monster.”

Appearance: Clear orange, like a big glass of honey. Off-white head, generous and leaving lacing.

Smell: Sweet and hoppy, with grapefruit and spicy resin. A touch of candy-sweet malt.

Taste: Clean and classic big hop flavor, bitter, a touch spicy, a touch woody. Crisp toasty malt body with a hint of alcohol strength.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and very crisp—a tad sharp, even—with bitter lingering aftertaste.

Overall: A “classic hop” IPA, very solid. (Classic in the American hopping sense, of course.)

On BeerAdvocate, it scores an overall grade of B. On RateBeer, it scores 3.47 out of 5 and is in their 84th percentile.
