Received: Deschutes Jubel 2015

The latest from Deschutes Brewery‘s Reserve Series came to the house today: Jubel 2015 (the “Super Jubel”):

Deschutes Brewery Jubel 2015

Here’s the description:

Affectionately referred to as “Super Jubel”, Jubel 2015 is an imperial take on our festive winter ale. Notes of toasted caramel, raisins, dates and figs are complemented by spicy and herbal hop aromas. Originally planned as a once-a-decade-ale; we just couldn’t wait another five years.

Malt: Pale, Special B, Crystal, Roasted Barley, Flaked Barley
Hops: Millennium, Nugget, Cascade, Willamette, US Tettnang, East Kent Goldings
Barrel-Aging: (50%) 12 Months in Pinot Noir and new Oregon Oak

I’ll be sitting on this bottle for a while, as I stopped in to the brewery last Friday during the release and had a snifter of it already. It’s a nice beer, chewy with dark fruits, but it does need some age on it (and the “best after” date on the bottle is in 2016).

Incidentally, the original “Super Jubel” that all the stories emanate from—about a stolen Jubelale keg that got dropped in the snow and freeze-distilled, like an eisbock—date back to John Harris’ reign as brewmaster, probably circa 1990. Apparently it was so good that then-brewer Tim Gossack hauled another keg up to the roof to try to recreate it (unsuccessfully).
