Received: Deschutes Da Shootz!

Deschutes Brewery is joining the low-carb, light lager market with its latest year-round canned beer: Da Shootz! The beer has been available on draft for a short while already and cans are hitting the market; on Friday I received two from the brewery.

Think “lifestyle lager” along the lines of the Michelob Ultra market. This 4% ABV pilsner is notably listed with 99 calories and 5.5 carbs, the first time I believe I’ve seen Deschutes list “carbs” with a beer. (Calories have long been listed with many of their core beers; Mirror Pond Pale Ale has 170 calories per 12 ounces, for instance.) Here’s a pull from the press sheet that came with the cans:

Da Shootz! is a clean, light bodied, contemporary American Pilsner with only 99 calories and 5.5 carbs. This bubbly and refreshing lifestyle beer is distinct in its high-quality flavor profile; lightly toasted from single origin Synergy Select Pilsen malt with notes of citrus and tropical from carefully selected American hop varieties including Lemondrop and Azacca.

Da Shootz! plays on the many mispronunciations of the brewery’s name over the last thirty years. Its low key, laid back nature, Da Shootz! loosely represents, “it’s good” in Hawaiian. The packaging is a colorful blast and although appears tropical, all flora and fauna represented are native to Deschutes’ home state of Oregon.

I have to be honest: I don’t really like the design very much. It’s a break from the brewery’s packaging brand and nothing about it says “light lager” to me; instead I think “tropical fruit punch.” It’s a baffling choice.

I’ve already tried the beer itself, and I think it’s quite good, in fact. So there’s a cognitive dissonance for me with these cans.
