Oregon Beer Week: By the numbers

Oregon Beer WeekJust some facts and figures on Oregon’s beer industry, which is always interesting. Most courtesy of the Oregon Brewers Guild.

  • 73 brewing companies operate 96 brewing facilities in Oregon.
  • Portland has 30 breweries within its city limits. That’s about 1 brewery (or brewpub) for every 19,200 people.
  • That’s more than any other city in the world.
  • The Portland Metro area has 38 breweries (interesting that the Metro area "only" has 8 more than Portland proper).
  • Bend has 5 brewing companies operating 6 facilities within the city limits (Cascade Lakes, while they have their Lodge in Bend, brews all their beer in Redmond, I believe). Soon to be 6 and 7 (when Brewtal Brewing opens).
  • That’s about 1 brewery (or brewpub) for every 13,500 people. (Soon to be 1 for 11,570.)
  • The Central Oregon area has 7 (soon to be 8) brewing companies total.
  • Oregon is the second largest producer of craft beer in the United States. (Annoyingly, I can’t find numbers to back this up. I suspect California is number one; the best I can do right now is say that in 2007 Oregon produced about 860,000 barrels.)
  • Oregon is the number two hop-growing state.
  • $2.25 billion is the total economic impact of the beer industry in Oregon.
  • The Oregon Brewers Festival is the largest gathering of independent craft brewers in the U.S.
