Oregon Beer News, first week of September 2015

Oregon BeerHere’s beer news from around Oregon for the week of August 31 through September 4 and the weekend; because it’s Labor Day weekend and then back to school next week, so things will be slow here on the blog (no daily news posts). I’ll try to keep this post updated if more news pops up, so if you have anything to share please contact me to keep me in the loop.

General News:

Saraveza (Portland) is looking to hire a beer buyer and event coordinator—is that you? “This person possesses strong organizational skills that can motivate employees, has retail and event coordinating experience, can oversee budgets and inventory and is comfortable being in the public eye. This position is a full-time management position that includes some day and some night shifts that also act as support for the restaurant.” Read the full qualifications and expectations here.

Oregon City’s new Bent Shovel Brewing has their Winding Road Amber Ale on tap at Bigfoot Growlers at Damascus. (I’m not sure I’ve seen them on tap before?) “Winding Road Amber is light bodied, crisp and flavorful with a beautiful amber color. The clean yeast profile allows the European malt flavors and delicate hop aromas to shine. This beer is perfect for an autumn evening. 5.2% ABV 35 IBUs”

Deschutes Brewery (Bend) has posted the artwork for this year’s Jubelale label! “This piece is called ‘First Tracks First Cast’ by Taylor Rose & features a wintery hiking scene along a trout-filled riverbank. Get your poster signed by the artist at our Jubelale Celebration on September 28th from 5-8pm at our pub in Bend.”

Monday 8/31:

Belmont Station (Portland) today is hosting Astoria’s Fort George Brewery for a tasting and a 3-Way IPA contest from 5 to 7pm: “Join Fort George’s El Jefe of Sales/Marketing, Tim Ensign, as he pours samples from the wide array of Fort George cans. In the taproom, we will pour a special, rare keg from Fort George’s new kettle souring program; a sour peach ale called Eat a Peach! And make sure to take a 4-pack of Fort George 3-Way home for a chance to win a cool prize that includes a one-night stay at The Commodore Hotel in Astoria (room subject to availability), plus a $50 Fort George gift card and a 64-ounce Fort George growler! Contest runs Aug. 20-Sept. 11 at noon. And we will announce the winning ticket on our website just after noon on Sept. 11.”

Tuesday 9/1:

McMenamins Fulton Pub & Brewery (Portland) has a limited-edition beer tasting from 5pm onward, featuring Cleo’s Gold: “This refreshing golden ale has a mild floral hoppy quality that finishes dry but not too bitter. There is a faint tartness present due to the introduction of lactic acid to the wort. Light, crisp, and delicious!”

Cascade Brewing (Portland): Their Tap It Tuesday at the Barrel House at 6pm is featuring Strawberry Lemonade, “a single-barrel release featuring our sour Wheat ale base beer aged in a Pinot Noir barrel with lemon peel and vanilla beans, then blended with a touch of our 2014 Strawberry project. Refreshing summer flavors of lemonade and fresh strawberries round out with a subtle vanilla finish.” Yum!

Wednesday 9/2:

The Green Dragon (Portland) will have their Green Dragon Brew Crew special beer release.

Rock Bottom Brewery (Portland) has a Chef and Brewer Tasting from 5:30 to 6:30pm: “Chef’s creating special nibbles to pair with our hand crafted beers. This is a tasting you don’t want to miss.”

Thursday 9/3:

McMenamins Old Church (Wilsonville) has a special beer tasting and meet the brewer starting at 5pm for Bonne Chiere Tripel Grand Reserve: “Barrel aged for over a year, this potent Belgian Tripel shines with the wisdom only age brings. Like a fine cellared Riesling, our Grand Reserve boasts distinguished notes of fresh cut cedar, cigar box, ripe plums, and golden raisins. Made with the finest imported French grain, Bonne Chiere displays a distinct rich European malt character. For added authenticity, brewing salts were judiciously added to replicate the brewing water of Antwerp Belgium. The use of “Noble” style hops ensures a delicate hop aroma while Belgian Ardennes yeast supplies the necessary Belgian yeast character. A special blend of spices carefully added to the kettle ensures that each sip is layered with as much depth as possible.”

The Green Dragon hosts their weekly meet the brewer event.

Friday/the Weekend 9/4-6:

Bend’s The Little Woody kicks off Friday at 5pm, and continues all day Saturday from noon to 10pm. This is a fun beer festival you’ll not want to miss, featuring all wood-aged beers from a wide variety of breweries from around the Northwest and California (many are local to Central Oregon, of course). I wrote a longer post about it here, along with the beer list. Be there!
