Oregon Beer News, 10/30/2013

Oregon BeerIt’s the day before Halloween, which may also be know as Mischief Night where you’re from. No mischief here, but there is some Halloween-flavored beer news to enjoy. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often for the latest news. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.

McMenamins Old St. Francis School (Bend) has their monthly O’Kanes Cask Series Release tonight starting at 5pm and featuring a firkin of Whiskey Widow: “Here at OSF we have a special treat for the patrons at O’Kanes. We have specially set aside a keg of Black Widow Porter in our Firkin! A traditional way to pour beer on a night with an eerie tradition of asking for tricks or treats! Which will you get tonight? Each deep-black goblet of Black Widow is packed full of the robust notes afforded by generous amounts of black and roast malts and further spirited with ethereal wisps of caramel and licorice. On top of it all the Widow has infused a wicked amount of Oak Spirals that have been soaked in our Hogshead Whiskey for over 2 weeks. The sweet whiskey flavor and oaky finish meld well with the bold malts and licorice of the Black Widow! Get your special treat this Halloween at O’Kanes.” It will be available until it’s gone.

McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse (Hillsboro) has a limited-edition beer tasting today featuring two beers: The Widow Jäger and Trick Bag. The first is their Black Widow Porter with additions: “Both substantial and sublime, this elixir is sure to slake the most fiendish of thirsts, but wait don’t forget the Jager soaked Oak spirals that have sat in this keg for several weeks to add depth and ghoulish delight.”  And with Trick Bag: “We spiked a keg of Sleepy Hollow Nut Brown with carmelized sugar and vanilla bean to put a smile on your face. Savour this candy-like elixir that is nutty and chestnut colored with medium body.” The tasting starts at 6pm and lasts until the beer is gone.

The aptly-Halloween-named 7 Devils Brewing (Coos Bay) is open for business today—the first brewery in Coos Bay for a long time (if ever—I don’t have my PNW historic breweries book handy): “Hey everyone! We are ready for you! We will be open on Wednesday, October 30th from 4-9pm! Thank you all for support, love, energy, and believing in us:) We feel so blessed to be a part of this community.”

Belmont Station (Portland) is hosting a tasting with Artisanal Imports tonight from 5 to 8pm: “Artisanal Imports features an impressive number of very high quality Belgian and other European ales and others. Northwest rep Jason Rowley will be sampling St. Feuillien Saison (in cans!) from Belgian and two from the Bavarian/Netherlands brewery, De Koningshoeven: La Trappe Quad and La Trappe Isid’or. There might even be a surprise fourth beer too!”

Saraveza (Portland) is tapping the new Dogfish Head American Beauty in a special release tonight from 5 to 10pm, featuring a specialty Dogfish Head taplist and: “We’ll have a Jerry Garcia look-a-like and ‘Dead’ themed costume contest (come dressed in your best ‘shakedown street’ gear, as a ‘spinner’ or as ‘Bertha’ the skeleton!).  We’ll also be playing music from live Dead shows and will air the recently remastered version of “Sunshine Daydream”, the concert film from August, 27, 1972, filmed in Veneta, OR.” Sounds like fun, don’t miss out!

Portal Brewing (Medford) has their own special release tonight: “Up for a big dark beer? We got one for you! We are releasing our double imperial CDA tonight! Hoptopistoffamus, AKA “Black Betty”. 10.1 ABV 87.1 IBU’s and 51.5 SRM. Come grab one!”
