Oregon Beer News, 09/10/2012

Oregon BeerIt’s Monday and the start of a brand-new week, and here is the news in Oregon beer for this September 10th. As usual I’ll be periodically updating this news throughout the day, so check back often for the latest updates. And if you  have news to share please contact me and I can get it updated.

As I blogged earlier today, it’s the first day of Corvallis Beer Week which is running all week long through Sunday the 16th! The festivities start this afternoon at 4pm at Les Caves next door to Block 15 Brewery, where there will be some specialty taps pouring, and then the kickoff march will commence: “We are going to march, stroll, meander and real strut from Les Caves Bier & Kitchen to the NW Monroe Ave. Block Party.  Last year we had 35 supporters and a dog!  However, we are shooting for over 100…so please come help make this happen Corvallis!” Also be on the lookout for other great beer deals.

Boneyard Beer (Bend) is brewing up a collaboration beer with brewing legend John Harris (of Deschutes Brewery and Full Sail fame) today, as they posted on Facebook: “Tony’s Mentor and OG Deschutes Brewery Brewer, John Harris collaborating on a India Wheat Ale as we type. Name is TBD and brew should hit the streets in a little over 2 weeks. Prepare to salivate!” Can’t wait! And “India Wheat Ale” is one of the newer (yet inevitable) ideas I’ve seen in the “India ___ Ale” pantheon of late.

Full Sail (Hood River) will no longer be contract brewing the Henry Weinhard’s line of beers, Ezra at the New School reports today—in fact, Henry’s won’t be brewed in Oregon anymore, period. “Now that line will be cut after March of 2013, when SAB Miller will end its contract with Full Sail. This is big news for Oregon craft beer and another end to Henry’s, as SAB Miller attempts to franchise the brand by opening more Henry’s Taverns across the country and brewing and distributing the beers regionally.” Big (and sad) news for Oregon and Full Sail in particular. I’d enjoy a Henry’s every now and again, and always enjoyed the connection with Oregon’s first “regional” beer.

Alameda Brewing (Portland) has a special release coming up this Thursday the 13th from 5 to 8pm: Stubs Old Crow Hazelnut Porter. “Our latest brew pays homage to the one-legged crow living in the graveyard behind the Brewhouse (take a look the next time you’re in). He’s been around for about six years & likes to eat the spent grain from the brewery. He’s a tough old dude – clearly the leader of his pack. About the Beer: We used locally-sourced hazelnuts in the mash to give the porter’s back notes a slight nutty flavor. The nutty character does not overpower allowing the chocolate and roast flavors to dominate, leaving a smooth, well-balanced finish. Come by Belmont Station when we introduce this baby to the world & let us know what you think! 6.7% ABV, 15 IBU’s.”  Brewmaster Carston Haney will be on hand to answer questions as well.

The Green Dragon (Portland) has a meet the brewer this Thursday, featuring Portland’s Burnside Brewing. They’ll have Burnside brews on tap starting at 5pm and the meet the brewer portion starts at 6.

Ambacht Brewing (Hillsboro) has a new bottle release out soon: “Ambacht Pie Cherry Dark is in bottles and will soon be released. Because of the price of Pie Cherries this year, we had to raise the price to $10.00/bottle (just this year I hope) and so we bottled in 750ml bottles. It should be ready at the beginning of October this year!”  Pie Cherry Dark is a farmhouse-style ale brewed seasonally and aged on whole Montmorency pie cherries from Yamhill. It’s 6.5% abv and sounds pretty tasty—keep an eye out for them.
