Oregon Beer News, 06/18/2013

Here’s the news in Oregon beer for Tuesday, the 18th of June. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted as well.

McMenamins White Eagle Saloon (Portland) is hosting a tasting and “meet your makers” from the Edgefield today starting at 5pm, featuring the Edgefield’s Going Back to Cali Organic Common they debuted next week. “When we were trying to find inspiration for our entry to the North American Organic Brewers Fest coming up in June we turned – as we often do – to the Notorious B.I.G. for guidance. The resulting California Common style beer is a light amber lager fermented at ale temperature with a malt profile smoother than Biggie’s rhymes, and a hop presence to provide the balance that will have you “going  going back back” for another.”

Cascade Brewing (Portland): Tonight’s Tap It Tuesday event at the Barrel House at 6pm is featuring “Live” Lactic-American: “a NW style sour wheat ale aged 16 months in American oak. This showcase for lactic fermentation & American oak features bright, tart oak and wood vanillin in the nose. Tart lactic acid and a creamy wood softness dance on the palate, leading to a slightly tart, grainy citrus note with a lingering American oak finish. 7.5% ABV”

Worthy Brewing (Bend): They are filling cans with beer for the first time today! Brewmaster Chad Kennedy posted the update on Facebook yesterday, and on Worthy’s page they’ve had a few “sneak peeks” at the new canning line. I’m looking forward to seeing (and tasting) the finished results.

Laurelwood Brewing (Portland) is moving to expand and start offering several of their beers in 12-ounce bottles, via a contracting with the Craft Brew Alliance, as reported by Ezra at the New School. “Laurelwood is set to increase its production by as many as 15,000 barrels a year, making it finally possible to package Laurelwood beers in 12 ounce glass bottles. With the rise of production, there will be a few changes, but we have been  assured the quality will be the same. Among those changes is the once-flagship Free Range Red, Laurelwood’s first organic beer, will now no longer be organic. Unconfirmed rumors also suggest that the current best-selling Workhorse IPA’s recipe will change due to hop availability and CBA’s existing hop contracts not accounting for specific varieties key to Workhorse.”  Owner Mike Dekalb also has some comments regarding the changes on the post, it’s worth a read.

Among the other anniversaries happening this weekend, Eugene’s Sixteen Tons is celebrating their 3rd anniversary on Saturday the 22nd with a special bottle release: they teamed up with The Commons Brewery out of Portland on a special beer named Fishing with Hallet. “At 3pm Josh from The Commons will be pouring samples of Hallet and other beers. We will have The Commons highly regarded Fruit Beer Fest entry Bier Royale on tap among others.” The Commons posted additional beer details: “Fishing with Hallet is a Belgian Dark Strong aged in 2nd use Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon barrels with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis and was brewed in honor of Sixteen Tons 3rd Anniversary. Bottles are limited and are $14 each.” Sounds enticing for sure!

Silver Moon Brewing (Bend): Their Growler Power Hour specials this week (where you get $6 growler fills from 4 to 6pm on Tuesday and Wednesday) are for Snake Bite Porter and Lone Crow American Wheat. The Lone Crow is “an easy drinking summer wheat beer brewed with Northwest 2 row, wheat and French caramel pilsner malts. It’s lightly hopped with New Zealand Green Bullet and Motueka. Enjoy this light bodied, thirst quenching summer beer. 5% ABV / 22 IBUs / 4 SRM”

The Green Dragon (Portland) is hosting a meet the brewer tonight at 5pm featuring their own in-house Buckman Botanical Brewery: “Buckman Botanical Brewery’s brewmaster, Danny Connors, will be here at 5pm for Meet the Brewer – stop in and learn about the raw ingredients that go into each batch, including chamomile flower, honey, ginger, mugwort, wormwood, tea, orange peel and yarrow.” Sounds like a good opportunity to learn about the use of herbs and such in beers as well.

Oakshire Brewing (Eugene): They have a new Single Batch series beer that sounds fruity-licious: “Strawberry Farm. A Belgian Farmhouse Ale with freshly picked Strawberries from Lone Pine Farms. This light bodied ale is a hazy golden color with a fruity and mildly spicy aroma; finishing dry, yet with a full berry flavor. Pairs great with grilled Salmon; trust us. ABV: 5.2% IBU:10 OG 11.1 Join us Oakshire folks as we tap this at 6p today in our Public House!”
