Oregon BeerHere’s the news in Oregon beer for Tuesday, the 16th of June. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often for the latest news. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.

Belmont Station (Portland) is hosting Oregon City’s new Coin Toss Brewing for a meet the brewer event today from 5 to 7pm: “What better way to celebrate Portland Beer Week than with a brand-new Portland-area brewery that’s just getting off the ground? Well, we can do even better than that because Coin Toss Brewing is named after the famous flip of the coin that destined Portland to not be named “Boston” — which was the namesake city on the losing end of that contest. The founder/brewer is Tim Hohl, who many might know as the “morning voice” on KPAM radio’s First Edition and the station’s news director. A longtime home brewer, Tim airs a weekly beer segment on KPAM on Thursday mornings in addition to launching Coin Toss! We will have all three of the current Coin Toss beers on tap — Black Hohl CDA, George’s Honest Ale (a lovely, summertime sip similar to a recipe of George Washington’s) and the brand-new Nine Eyes IPA! Tim will be in-house to answer questions and talk beer, something he loves to do almost as much as brewing it! So swing by, say hi and raise a pint to the fact that we aren’t celebrating Boston Beer Week!”

Craft Kitchen & Brewery (Bend) opened up this past Saturday, in the space formerly occupied by the now-defunct Old Mill Brew Wërks. (In fact several of the people involved with OMBW before it closed are part of Craft now.) The local Bend Bulletin newspaper had a detailed article about what to expect: “The Craft bar will have 20 taps, with nine flagship beers and three seasonals brewed by Michael McMahon. The remaining taps will feature hard to find European-style beers. Craft standards include kolsch, American-style lager, single hop India Pale Ale, red ale, beechwood smoked porter, and a hybrid German maibock named after Elly, the Stevens’ 17-month-old daughter. [Co-owner] Courtney Stevens especially looks forward to McMahon’s “deceptively smooth” Smokestack Stout, which will be on nitro.” Beers are brewed on a 3.5-barrel system, and the menu is American Southern-inspired.
