Oregon Beer News, 06/21/2018

Oregon Cider Week logoHappy Solstice! Today is the first day of summer which of course now means you can only drink Summer Ale until September. (Or, you know, not!) Here’s the Oregon beer news for this June 21, which I will be updating throughout the day, so keep checking back for the latest news and happenings.

Oregon Cider Week begins today! This seventh annual event celebrating all things (Oregon) cider runs from today, June 21, through Sunday, July 1, and the list of events for each day can be found here (filter by individual day). I will also list each day’s events on the news roundups, and you can find today’s events kicking off the week below.

Belmont Station (Portland) is hosting Melvin Brewing for an IPA release and fundraiser tonight from 5 to 8pm: “Melvin’s latest addition to their core lineup is ‘Crafted on Wyoming’s West Coast … with 100-percent lupulin cryopowder, we hit the cross-fader between old-school brewing skills and new-school hop technology, creating this tasty remix guaranteed to keep your head ringing.’ Sure, it will be delicious. But it also will be life-changing. Maybe not for you, but for people benefiting from the great works of RIP Medical Debt. RIP is working to raise enough in donations by the end of 2018 to purchase and abolish $50 million in unpayable veteran and military personnel medical debt in America. Because of their buying power, $100 in donations can forive $10,000 in debt. And all the money raised through Your IPA sales in Oregon stays in Oregon! So come taste this futuristic approach to homegrown beer. And help get some Oregonians back on their feet financially!”

McMenamins Kennedy School (Portland) has its monthly limited-edition beer tasting today at 5pm, featuring the opportunity to meet the brewers (Brian Riley and Ryan Lund) and check out the School’s Concordia Brewery. The beer that will be sampling tonight isn’t listed (which is a shame, the site used to list the beers for all of the tasting events but hasn’t lately) but don’t let that deter you.

Here are the Oregon Cider Week events for today:

A number of Central Oregon breweries are participating in the American Red Cross Battle of the Breweries 2018, which is an ongoing blood drive that runs from June 18 through June 29 (next Friday). It’s a good cause and worth checking out: “Every two SECONDS, someone in the U.S. needs the life saving gift of blood. There is currently a shortage of ALL blood types. In order to bring awareness to this URGENT need, local breweries have partnered with the American Red Cross for a friendly little competition! The cool thing is, you can save a life just by participating! Here’s how it works; Give a pint, vote for your favorite brewery and get a coupon for a pint/taster on your next tasting room/pub visit. (21+, of course) It’s that easy! Donation times are super flexible, in most cases it takes less than an hour. Download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App and schedule an appointment, call 1-800-733-2767 or just walk-in. You won’t be sorry you took the time to save a life!”

The Upper Lip at Bailey’s Taproom (Portland) is hosting An Evening with Shelton Brothers Oregon today starting at 5pm: “Come join us to experience some of our absolutely favorite beers in our catalog and chat with one of the actual Shelton Brothers! Brother Dan will be in attendance to answer any questions you may have and to help us present the best we have to offer. The beers being poured tonight will be a representation of the pinnacle of what we are fortunate enough to work with. These will be a combination of our most legacy offerings and our deepest cuts. Many of these beers are ones that have fueled the fire for the beer scene we enjoy today! Some will be historical, some will be rare, all will be delicious!!”

Three Creeks Brewing (Sisters) is tapping and previewing its ten year anniversary beer today: “Today at 4, join us at our Sisters pub for the tapping of our 10 Year Anniversary Imperial IPA!” On the website, here is how the brewery describes this beer: “Big. Bold. Beautiful. This magnificently-hoppy, Imperial IPA embodies everything Three Creeks represents: passion, persistence and dedication in the pursuit of crafting great beers! Expect big notes of citrus, tropical fruit and piney goodness. A decade of great brewing history all rolled into one special beer and we are proud to share this special milestone with all of you. Cheers to 10 years!” It’s 8.6% abv and 98 IBUs.
