Oregon Beer, McMenamins Ruby AleHere is the news in Oregon beer for this hump day, Wednesday, March 21. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often for updates. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.

McMenamins is celebrating the 32nd birthday of Ruby Ale today, one of the company’s flagships and best-known beers. All McMenamins locations will be participating with $4 pints of Ruby, food specials, and more. Ruby was first brewed in March of 1986 at the Hillsdale Brewpub in Portland; back then it was called Ruby Tuesday, which ultimately had to be shortened due to conflict with the restaurant chain of the same name. Every batch of Ruby has 42 pounds of raspberry puree added (presumably per six-barrel batch); 32 years ago it was certainly one of Oregon’s earliest fruit beers, and is still popular today. Cheers to an Oregon classic!

Widmer Brothers Brewing (Portland): Today at its Pub Widmer is celebrating the release of its Portland Pub Variety Pack, from 4 to 7pm. “Join Widmer Brothers Brewing on Wednesday, March 21st from 4-7pm as we celebrate the recent release of our Portland Pub Variety Pack, and the 4 beers that made it possible! The Portland Pub Series Variety Pack is made up of our newest year-round release, Russell Street IPA, two current favorites who each received a packaging refresh, PDX Pils and Steel Bridge Porter, and a variation of our flagship beer Hefe, Hefe X Mosaic. This version of Hefe is hopped with Mosaic hops, and is only available in the Variety Pack!”

Three Mugs Brewing (Hillsboro) has a spring beer release dropping today, Meanderin’ Mandarin, with the release event taking place from 6 to 9pm.

Pono Brewing (Portland) has a new beer release today as well: New beer dropping into the atmosphere this Wednesday (3/21). Space Force Mango is a hazy mango pale ale with a blend of hops with galaxy hops on the forefront. The mango purée adds a killer aroma while the body of the beer is a drier, less sweet kind of hazy.” Certainly is timely…

McMenamins Cedar Hills (Beaverton) is hosting a limited-edition beer tasting today, featuring Oak Hills brewer Dan Black and his Barrel-Aged Night Of The Living Bread Imperial Stout: “This Imperial Stout is full of life, provided by six different malts that contribute flavors of roast, chocolate and bread. A large dose of dark Belgian Candi Syrup adds notes of toffee, with Chinook and US Golding Hops, star anise and mugwort to balance out the brew. The barrel-aged version of this beer boasts notes of vanilla and oak from the barrel, in turn furthering it’s complexity.” The tasting runs from 5 to 8pm.

Belmont Station (Portland) is hosting Sixpoint Brewing and the launch party for its new app: “Introducing a new way of securing and reserving ultra rare one-off beers. Shane Welch from Sixpoint will walk you through the processes of the app and all of its fancy features. Be the first to experience this new technology. As always we will have some great beer on tap which will include:
Alpineflo – Helles Lager
Righteous Ale – Barrel Aged Rye Ale
Anti Resin – New England Style IPA”

Baerlic Brewing (Portland) has a new beer release today: Hellsner, a 100% Oregon grown helles lager. “Hellsner is brewed 100% with Oregon grown ingredients entirely from the estate of Goschie Farms, Inc.—Lyon Barley and Santiam hops! The rad people of Mainstem Malt and Goschie Farms, Inc. worked together to grow a special Barley Variety called Lyon at the Goschie Farm in Silverton, Oregon just 40 miles from our brewery! That is a monumental achievement, people!” Head over to Baerlic after 4pm to check out the beer.

Atlas Cider (Bend) announced today that it is joining the Maletis distribution family: “We continue to work on greater NW distribution of our cider to share with you. 22oz bottles are still our most widely available format for all our varieties in stores and hopefully you also have a nearby watering hole that features us on draft. We are thrilled to announce that you will see more of Atlas cider in the Portland area as we work closely with a new distributor, Maletis Beverage. We also want to thank General Distributors, Inc. for their support of our brand over the last 5 years and wish the best to their team, they saw the potential in us and were paramount in our growth in becoming one of Oregons largest producers of cider, for that we are truly grateful.”
