Oregon Beer News, 02/13/2017

Oregon BeerWelcome to the start of a new week—I hope you’re ready for it! Here’s the news and events in Oregon beer for this Monday, February 13. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. If you have news to share, please let me know and I can get that updated as well.

Bend Brewing Company is kicking off a Big Bold Beer & Dessert tasting flight special today that looks to run throughout the week until the 16th. “Calling all BIG & BOLD beer lovers- we’ve got the tasting flight for you! We’ll be offering five of our richest porters brewed throughout the years on a single tasting flight served with chocolate covered strawberries. Baltic Porter 2012, Baltic Porter 2013, Baltic porter 2016, Raven Bourbon Aged Baltic Porter, and Lovely Cherry Baltic Porter”

And remember Deschutes Brewery is also still hosting their For the Love of The Abyss vertical flights and menu specials at their Bend Pub through Valentines Day: “The Abyss is back in all its glory! From Saturday, February 11th through Valentines Day, Tuesday, February 14th, we will be pouring all your favorite Abyss varieties, available together in one sample tray for $22! Snifters of each for $7! Delicious food pairing specials are also planned and ready to go! Head down to the pub this weekend and warm up with The Abyss!”

This Saturday, February 18, is the first Zwickelmania weekend taking place in the Portland Metro area! (The rest of the state will follow on Saturday the 25th.) Zwickelmania is the statewide “open house” for breweries to open their doors to special tours and tastings from 11 to 4pm, and now in its ninth iteration it has taken on the air of a beer holiday. The list of participating breweries for the Portland Metro area is here; and here’s the shuttle routes provided by Brewvana tours. Also don’t forget you can generate and print Zwickel Bingo cards to take with you and see how many bingos (and blackouts) you can get just for fun!

Concurrent with the Portland Zwickelmania fun on Saturday, there are a couple of brewery anniversaries taking place as well. First, Migration Brewing in Portland is celebrating their 7th anniversary with a party all day long: “Come and celebrate Migration Brewing’s very special 7th Anniversary with us! Zwicklemania tours and events start at 11am and continue all day. Featuring 2 brand new beer releases: 7th Inning Stretch coffee milk stout, a collaboration with Nossa Familia Coffee and Loyal Legion; and our new Imperial IPA! Special food menu and new bottle releases! Live DJ in the evening.” Congrats on seven years!

And Salem’s Vagabond Brewing is celebrating their 3rd anniversary on Saturday the 18th (though doesn’t coincide with Zwickelmania since that will hit Salem on the 25th): “Vagabond Brewing is turning 3 years old! Come celebrate with us with cake eating contests, live music, awesome food, giveaways, bouncy house and much much more! So everyone can enjoy, MINORS will be welcome!”

Vertigo Brewing (Hillsboro) has a new, specialty, super-limited beer coming out today just in time for Valentines Day (Eve): “Today (2/13) we tap the one and only keg of our White Chocolate Razz. This is our regular Razz that was brewed with Ghirardelli White Chocolate. This won’t last long. Taproom opens at 4:00.”

Buoy Beer (Astoria) has a new beer on tap now—Spanish Coffee Stout: “Our Spanish Coffee Stout is a joint collaboration between our friends at Street 14 Café, Pilot House Distilling, and (a friend of a friend) Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Beginning with a lighter bodied and smooth stout to lay a chocolate and nutty base for the beer, we then transferred the beer onto 5 gallons of delicious Stumptown Nitro Original Cold-Brew, Madagascar vanilla beans, and Hungarian Oak staves that had been soaked in local Pilot House Distilling “Barrelman” Rum and fresh orange peel. Finishing as an approachably delicious concoction that floats the line between beer and coffee cocktail – great for breakfast or any time.”

Hood River’s Big Horse Brew Pub also has a coffee stout just tapped today: “We just tapped our last leg of Kickstand-Cold Brew “Nightmare Stout”. Made with 10 Speed Coffee Co. delicious cold brew coffee. Won’t be back till next winter!”

And while I’m linking to stouts on tap (happy Stout Month!), I see that Mia & Pia’s Pizzeria in Klamath Falls has one newly on tap: “Sweethearts Chocolate Stout! On tap now! Be sure to come in soon to get a chocolate treat to go with your Chocolate Stout!!”
