Oregon Beer News, 01/30/2015

Oregon BeerIt’s the final weekend of January already! And it’s Super Bowl weekend—I hope you have your beer selections picked out! Here’s the news in Oregon beer for the weekend of the 30th and 31st. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted as well.

Besides football, it’s a busy beer weekend, starting with the inaugural Salem Winter Brewfest which kicks off today at 4pm and continues all day tomorrow (noon to 11pm). It will be set up inside a heated tent on the Capitol Mall grounds, across the street from the Oregon State Capitol Building, and will feature 60+ beers, as well as food and live music. If you buy your ticket(s) in advance, it will cost you $10 (you can pre-purchase at a number of Salem brewery locations), or will cost you $15 at the door, which I expect will follow the usual brewfest-type schedule of tickets. They have the list of breweries and beers pouring on their website, so check it out if you are over Salem-way this weekend.

In Portland, Saraveza is kicking off their Super Barrel Weekend today which will last through Sunday—all of their taps will have barrel-aged beers on! “We here at Saraveza love our barrel-aged beers and want to share some of our favorites, rarities and vintages with you. This is not a festival, but a celebration if you will of sours, barley wines, imperial stouts, saisons, ipas etc. that have been aged in spirit or wine barrels. There is no entrance fee, there will be a few ticketed beers pouring out front and to make it easier on our beertenders there will be no flights, but we will be offering mostly 5oz pours of some of the best liquid you’ll ever put in your mouth!” Their lineup is fantastic, so if you’re PDX-bound or -present then you need to stop by sometime this weekend!

Belmont Station (Portland) today is hosting the Portland release of the Fort George/Commons Brewery collaboration beer, Plazm Farmhouse Ale, from 5 to 8pm: “Meet the collaborators who will be in-house to chat and answer questions as we welcome this new seasonal collaboration. In the biercafé, we will pour the Plazm plus two beers from both brewers. From Fort George: the latest Beta IPA (a “sneak preview” pilot brew of the upcoming Overdub IPA) and Bourbon Barrel Cavatica Stout. From The Commons: Citrus Myrtle and Plum Bretta. And, of course, we will have Plazm cans for sale in the bottle shop!”

The Bier Stein (Eugene) is hosting a tasting tonight with Redmond’s own Wild Ride Brewing, from 6 to 8pm, and will be featuring four of their beers on draft: Hopperhead IPA, Shades CDA, Mount Up Brown, and Stand Up & Shout Stout on Nitro. I haven’t seen any additional word but hopefully you’ll get to meet one or more of the Wild Ride folks as well.

Roscoe’s (Portland) is holding their fifth annual “New Breweries of Oregon Summit” today kicking off at 2pm, highlighting new breweries opening up this past year: “Lots of great new breweries have opened in Oregon in the past year. This event will be your opportunity to meet some of the brewers and owners and to try their beers! The beers will all be tapped by 2pm and different brewers will be in the house throughout the night. You won’t want to miss it.” You’ll be able to get taster trays of beers as well as full pours (I’m assuming).

Three Creeks Brewing (Sisters) will be at west Portland’s Uptown Market today from 5 to 8pm for a tap takeover: “We will be pouring Hoodoo Voodoo IPA, FivePine Chocolate Porter, Rudolph Imperial Red, TenPine Double Chocolate Porter and more. See you there!”

And, today is the official release of Three Creeks’ TenPine Chocolate Porter, according to the press release: “A true chocoholic’s dream, this amped up version of Three Creeks’ popular FivePine Chocolate Porter features double the chocolate malt and double the dark Belgian chocolate in the boil along with organic Cacao nibs added in the conditioning tank. The beer clocks in at 8.4% ABV and is available in 22oz bottles and draft.” It’s the second in their new Desperado Series of limited-edition bottled beers; the schedule for 2015 of this series is: “TenPine Chocolate Porter (Winter 2015), Stampede Ale (Spring 2015), Vaquero Imperial IPA (Summer 2015) and Bulletproof Coffee Stout (Fall 2015).”

StormBreaker Brewing (Portland): Tomorrow, Saturday the 31st, they are celebrating their first birthday and they are throwing a party! “We will have 3 special beers for the event (Bourbon Barrel Aged Winter Coat, Year 1 Belgian Barley Wine, and the return of KettleBreaker). With the exception of those 3, all beers will be $1 off day. All growler fills will be 50% off, all bottles to go will be $3, and we’ll have food specials. We will have raffle prizes every hour from 12-6, just walk in and get a ticket. Maybe you’ll win! In lieu of live music, we will have a magician instead because we always wanted a magician and we are now 1 and we want a magician. At some point we’ll have a bday cake to share with everyone! Don’t miss this historic event. You only turn 1 once.”

Broken Top Bottle Shop (Bend): Tonight they are hosting a free beer tasting with California’s Sierra Nevada Brewing (small brewery, you may have heard of them…) from 7 to 9pm. I expect there to be sample of Sierra Nevada’s new Hop Hunter IPA, because: “And, we’ll have Nooner Pilsner, Narwhal Imperial Stout and Hop Hunter IPA on tap!”

Worthy Brewing (Bend): Tonight is their weekly firkin Friday, with a firkin of something special on cask: “Today’s is Lights Out [Stout] with cinnamon and molasses…almost reminiscent of a graham cracker. See you at 4p for tapping time.” Pints from the firkin are $3 until it’s gone.
