Oregon Beer News, 01/16/2017

Oregon BeerIt’s the start of a new week, and the warm up is coming, at least temporarily. I hope the weekend was great for everyone! Let’s get into the Oregon beer news for the week of January 16. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. If you have news to share, please let me know and I can get that updated as well.

Ecliptic Brewing (Portland) announced that they are putting their award-winning Capella Porter into bottles. In 2016, Capella won gold at all three of the World Beer Cup, the U.S. Open Beer Championships, and the Oregon Beer Awards—brewmaster John Harris knows a thing or two about porter! “These things combined have created a demand for Capella Porter beyond its current draft only offering and Ecliptic is answering the calls. Starting January 19th, Ecliptic Brewing will release 22oz bottles of their Capella Porter alongside its current draft offering. Capella Porter will be part of the All the Time Series of beers from Ecliptic including Orbiter IPA, Spectra Hoppy Pilsner, and Carina Peach Sour Ale.”

Standing Stone Brewing (Ashland): Their Winter Brewer’s Dinner is this Wednesday, January 18, and there are still two tickets available if you would like to attend. “Chef Javier and Brewer Larry Chase are creating a 5 course menu that is sure to delight the taste buds and wow you and your beer drinking friends. Tickets are $75 per person (including gratuity) and seating is expected to sell out quickly. Purchase your ticket online or in our brewpub.” It starts at 6pm.

This Saturday, January 21, Bailey’s Taproom is holding their eighth annual CellarFest starting at noon. It will kick off Bailey’s ten-year anniversary, according to Brewpublic: “To kick off its 10 Year Anniversary, Bailey’s Taproom will host its annual CellarFest 2017 on Saturday, January 21st. Now going eight years strong, CellarFest is a day when the staff at Bailey’s digs deep into its cellar to find the best cellar aged beers to place on tap for one day only. This year is no exception from the partial draft list that the bar recently released.” The tap list they’ve posted thus far looks pretty great, so don’t miss this one!

Also this weekend are a couple of other festival-y events:

  • The Portland U-Brew & Pub is hosting their fifth annual Westmoreland/Sellwood Winter Brew Fest on Saturday the 21st at noon: “Treat yourself to 6 Unicorn Winter Warmers and 4 local winter beers. A live local Reggae and Jazz band will be playing original songs, and we will donate a portion of sales to Veterans of Foreign Wars #4248. $20 gets you 10 4oz samples and a Logo glass to take home. Winter Guest Taps:13 Virtues, Lompoc,Gigantic, Uptown Market, and Laurelwood Brewing Company!”
  • McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse (Hillsboro) has their Wassail Cider Fest taking place from 3 to 10pm: “Join us in the Octagonal Barn as we celebrate cider in the British tradition as a Wassail Festival. We’ll feature more than 10 local cider houses, live music and parade to “toast” the apple trees. Commemorative glass and tasting tokens can be purchased online or at the event. Wassail costumes are encouraged!”

Crux Fermentation Project (Bend): All this week in honor of the American Hop Convention coming to town, Crux has a “Holy Hopsapalooza” featuring a ton of specially-brewed hoppy beers: “In honor of the American Hop Convention being in town this week, our team has brewed up an extensive single hop beer line-up, 19 to be exact. It’s been a fun experiment to utilize all sorts of hops from throwbacks such as Fuggle, to the latest out of Oregon State University and from around the world. Let us know which familiar and not-so-familiar hops you enjoy most and be sure to try Oregon Tr’Ale IPA, a collaboration we did with several of our Central Oregon brewing brethren.”

Wild Ride Brewing (Redmond) has a new beer going on tap today at their brewery tasting room: Hoptagious Imperial IPA. (This actually debuted this past weekend at the High Gravity Extravaganza at McMensmins in Bend.) And then Tuesday (tomorrow) they will be tapping the Oregon Tr’Ale IPA, the collaboration brew made for the American Hop Convention.

And more for the American Hop Convention, as Bend’s Boneyard Beer is apparently teaming up today with Baker City’s Barley Brown’s for a collaboration beer! All I have so far is a name—Allocation IIPA (Imperial IPA), hopefully I’ll get more details soon.

Hood River’s Full Sail Brewing has added a new flavor to their Session Lager lineup: Black Cherry Black Lager. From the press release: “This brand new beer in the Session Series is everything fans have always loved about Session Black, now with a dash of dark cherry flavor. Still short, dark and drinkable. Still rocking those notes of roasty chocolate. But with a new twist. Session Black Cherry Black pours deep garnet in color with a creamy tan head. Aromas of cocoa and cherry with a subtle floral essence make it a smooth-drinking dark lager with a full palate of bittersweet chocolate and sweet cherry taste. Black Cherry Black is rich in flavor yet finishes cleanly and is remarkably refreshing.” Honestly—I’m not sure what I think about this. I guess I’ll need to drink some and see!
