Oregon Beer, The Bier Stein

Today is National Pie Day—because it’s also homebrew guru Charlie Papazian‘s birthday! In fact, today is Charlie’s 70th birthday and his final day as an employee of the Brewers Association, which he founded. His accomplishments cannot be overstated so please, raise a beer and enjoy a slice of pie for Charlie today!

In the meantime, here’s the Oregon beer news for this Wednesday the 23rd; as usual I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day so keep checking back for the latest.

The Bier Stein (Eugene) is Tapping Into Community today with Pasha’s Hopeful Steps and Block 15 Brewery: “We are tapping a keg of Fresh Pow from Block 15 on Wednesday, January 23rd to benefit Pasha’s Hopeful Steps. Since Block 15 has generously agreed to donate the keg, we will be donating 100% of the proceeds to this amazing organization! Pasha’s Hopeful Steps is a non-profit organization based here in Eugene. Their mission is to help Massai children with disabilities in rural Kenya to thrive and experience life at the highest quality possible.”

Prodigal Son Brewery (Pendleton) has a new seasonal beer to seek out: “Introducing our newest seasonal beer, Raspberry Chocolate Stout – this beer is all about the malt, with real raspberries and chocolate added post fermentation. Descriptors: Raspberry, Chocolate, Barry White, Candles.”

Pelican Brewing (Pacific City) is set for the return of Father of All Tsunamis, its barrel-aged imperial stout, coming out on draft and in 22-ounce bottles this month. “Father of All Tsunamis, which is a key player in Pelican’s popular barrel-aged series, is full of rich roasted flavors reminiscent of dark chocolate and espresso. This bold beer takes things one step further with aging in Rye whiskey barrels which adds layers of spiciness, vanilla and caramel. The Imperial Stout emerges with a richness and balance beyond any stout ever created at Pelican. Ingredients include pale malt, malted white wheat, Midnight Wheat malt, Black Prinz malt, pure cane sugar, Magnum hops, Willamette hops, pure local water, and pure ale yeast. ABV: 11.2% IBU: 55”

If you missed my earlier post this morning: Sunriver Brewing announced that it is opening a pub in Eugene this March, taking over the former Hot Mama’s Kitchen location.

Oakshire Brewing (Eugene) is hosting a fundraiser for Friends of Trees today: “$1 from every pint sold goes to growing trees & community! Join FoT staff onsite from 5-7pm. The first 5 to stop by the FOT table during this time with a beer in hand will go home with a rad Friends of Trees stainless steel pint cup!”

Deschutes Brewery is now offering free beer to furloughed government workers: “It is starting to be a looong January. We want to help take the edge off and are offering furloughed government employees a pint of our damn tasty beer (or tasty soda) on us. Come into our Pubs and Bend Tasting Room to take advantage. Fine print: One pint per day. Must be 21 years old to participate and have your federal I.D.”

And, Deschutes’ Bend Pub has a new beer just tapped today (good timing!): Whiskey Butte. “IBU: 30 ABV: 7.2% BREWERS NOTES: A delicious blend of our classic Black Butte Porter and our whiskey barrel aged anniversary Imperial Porter. The result brings notes of chocolate and vanilla with a touch of the warming whiskey spirit. This beer is a must try for yourself!”

Buoy Brewing (Astoria) has a new IPA on tap to check out: “101 South IPA – A beer to brave the storms of winter. High kilned English pale malt, German Vienna, and flaked oats provide the malt foundation. Spiced with a fusion of Azaaca, Simcoe, El Dorado, Equinox, and Strata hops for a bright citrusy afterglow.”

Buoy is also starting to host Sunday dinners for those affected by the government shutdown, as of this Sunday the 27th: “Our community is home to many affected by the government shutdown. Starting on Sunday, January 27th, we will also be hosting a free buffet-style meal from 4-8pm every Sunday (with the exception of Feb 3 11am-3pm) until the government is no longer shutdown. These dinners are available because of generous partnerships with Reed & Hertig, Graziano, Clatsop Distributing, and Ocean Beauty. Please bring your Government ID. Until the government is no longer shutdown anyone with an Active Duty Coast Guard card, Coast Guard dependent card or Furloughed Government Employee with an active government employment card will receive 25% off their total bill and kids under 12 will eat free when they order off of the kids menu.”

Belmont Station (Portland) is hosting a Wild Night with 3 Fonteinen & Guezerie Tilquin today: “We’re excited to offer some special lambics on this “wild” night. All this wild beer will make your mounth so happy you’ll want to boogie woogie on the corner of the street. We will feature a flight (from the bottle) of these Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen lambics: Oude Geuze, Oude Geuze Cuvée Armand & Gaston, Homage, and Gold Blend. The draft offerings from Gueuzerie Tilquin: Gueuze Tilquin Draft Version and Mure Tilquin Draft Version. If you haven’t gotten your fill of lambic with the offerings in the Biercafe, wander over to the Bottle Shop and check out the wide variety of gueze, kriek, framboise, and lambics to take home.”

Hop Valley Brewing (Springfield) has a new beer available on tap: “New beer available on tap at our Eugene/Springfield locations – Dream Killer Imperial IPA (8.6% ABV, 34 IBU). This IIPA is heavily hopped with Amarillo hops & Citra CryoHops® to create a dank, tropical musk. Cheers!”
