Oregon Beer, Hawthorne Hophouse

According to Jay Brooks, today is something called “Prohibition Remembrance Day” which is the day in 1919 that the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, which caused national prohibition to go into effect starting in 1920. Raise a beer today in defiance of Prohibition! And here’s the Oregon beer news for this 16th of January; as usual I’ll be updating this post throughout the day so check back often for the latest.

The Hawthorne Hophouse in Portland is currently running its annual IPA Challenge all month long, featuring 12 Oregon IPAs available for a blind taste test and vote. If you correctly identify the IPAs, you can win prizes, and the overall voting determines which IPA is the favorite and will be on tap at HH all year long. You have through the end of the month to get in there and take the challenge.

Also, Hawthorne Hophouse is under new ownership, and has been for the past couple of month. More on that story forthcoming.

AND as a special treat we’ll have Rob Horn and one of his beers from Triceratops Brewing, also from Tumwater, coming down to help kick off their Brut IPA collab release with Matchless. We’d love if you came and hung out too!”

The Tap & Growler in Eugene is welcoming Bend’s Crux Fermentation Project tonight for a Flight & Bite event starting at 5pm: “Heads up! McMenamins Oak Hills Brewpub (Portland) has its monthly limited-edition beer tasting today from 5 to 8pm, with brewer Dan Black on hand to pour London Avenue ESB: “This classic English-style Extra Special Bitter was made with traditional ingredients including a special London ESB Yeast from Wyeast. A light brown hue gives way to a malty ale that’s balanced with a fair amount of US Golding Hops. The hops provide notes of spice and pine while a white lacy head helps to track your gulps. Enjoy this throwback ale from the old country.”

The BeerMongers (Portland) has a rare and special treat today: a keg of Pilsner Urquell, unfiltered and unpasteurized! “This beer is shipped via Air France for your drinking pleasure. Get it while it lasts. Not to be missed.” Get it when it’s tapped at 3pm.

I mentioned it yesterday, that Hopworks Urban Brewery is opening a location inside the Portland Airport, and today is the grand opening of that spot: “On Wednesday, January 16th we welcome all travelers to join us for the Grand Opening of our PDX Airport location in Concourse E. Join us for theribbon cutting, live music, food, and a toast to celebrate our newest location.”
