Alexander Keith’s Nova Scotia Style Pale Ale

Alexander Keith's Nova Scotia Style Pale AleThe Nova Scotia Style Pale Ale was the second of the Alexander Keith’s beers I opened from the virtual tasting; like the lager, this is 5.4% alcohol by volume. It’s brewed loosely to an American Pale Ale style but struck me as more of an English-style ale with its hopping. They say:

This authentic pale ale is brewed with traditional two-row malt for a full, nutty flavor with a burst of spicy and citrusy hop notes. This brew is a deep golden color with a balanced bitterness that will appeal to today’s adventure seeking craft beer drinker. Alexander Keith’s Nova Scotia Style Pale Ale stays true to the principles of Alexander Keith’s legacy, using only the finest ingredients and brewed taking the time to ensure the brew is right.

Appearance: Bright copper, clear, very filtered; white head with decent lacing.

Smell: Nicely floral nose, a bit fruity and grassy hops—not the citrus of Northwest/American hops but more English style.

Taste: Crisp, bright flavor; herbal and lightly bitter and grassy. Toasty malt, faintly caramel. Crisp, drinkable.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body, crisp feel (filtering) but quenching and mostly pleasant.

Overall: Pleasant, drinkable, nothing revolutionary but a nice showing. Pale Ales are a tough beer to break into new markets with, and this one is up against some stiff competition.

On BeerAdvocate, it scores an overall grade of C. On RateBeer, it scores 2.63 out of 5, and is in their 24th percentile.
