22 McMenamins brewers present 22 beers in competition at the historic “Battle of the Belt”

PORTLAND, Ore.—On Saturday, February 25, 2012, the notorious “Battle of the Belt” rages for the nineteenth time at Hillsdale Brewery & Public House (1505 SW Sunset Blvd.). McMenamins’ Hillsdale Brewfest is a day-long event featuring 22 original brews such as Mad Hatter Imperial IPA, 4K Lager, Mexicali Rose Wheat and The Girl Next Door Belgian Blond, along with food specials, revelry, merriment and – most important – a competition for the coveted Belt. The Hillsdale Brewfest is free to attend, begins at 11 a.m. and is open to guests of all ages; those 21 and over may taste the ales.

Twenty-two of the finest ales from McMenamins’ breweries are sent into battle, their brewers vying for bragging rights, the notorious championship belt and a berth in the annual Oregon Brewers Festival. Patrons order “trays” of beer, arranged from lightest to darkest – each of the two trays offers eleven 4-ounce samples. It is our guests’ duty to decide who deserves the coveted title. With seventeen ales from Oregon and five from Washington, these beers cover the spectrum of brew styles – from steam beer to American brown ale, imperial stout to black IPA and beyond. Each taster casts one ballot that lists his or her top three choices.

The victorious brewer at this year’s Battle of the Belt will represent McMenamins at the 25th Annual Oregon Brewers Festival in downtown Portland on July 26–29, 2012. For more information, visit www.oregonbrewfest.com.

The first annual PDX Beer Week is proud to to present the World Premiere of Alison Grayson’s documentary on women in the craft beer industry. More than two years in the making, the film examines why women, a small segment of the craft beer industry, do what they do from their everyday lives to their struggles in work. It’s not for feminism or equality, it’s for “The Love of Beer.”

Brought to you by the first annual PDX Beer Week with presenting sponsors Google Places, Yelp!, Deschutes Brewery, and Bend Brewing, the August 20 premiere at the world-renowned McMenamins Bagdad Theater will be an event you won’t want to miss. Much more than the first screening of the documentary, it will also feature a panel of special guests, including subjects of the film Bend Brewing Brewmaster Tonya Cornett; Sarah Pederson, owner of famous North Portland bottle shop, beer bar, and pasty tavern Saraveza; Founder of the Pink Boots Society Teri Fahrendorf; and Deschutes Brewing’s Veronica Vega. All of the panelists will be speaking about the film and their experiences in the industry, and the session will be MC’d by the Beer Goddess herself, Lisa Morrison. It all starts at 7:30pm when the doors open for drinks and a meet-and-greet, followed by the panel discussion on-stage at 8:30pm and the roughly 75 minute documentary premiere at 9:00pm. Details on the event’s afterparty are soon to follow. Thanks to sponsors Deschutes and Bend Brewing, we will be offering $3 pint specials from these fine Bend-based breweries all evening!

Synopsis:
The Love of Beer is a documentary devoted to the stories and passion of the women at the forefront of the Pacific Northwest beer community. The beer industry is exploding; as of 2010, there are 1,759 breweries operating within the United States–1,716 of these are craft breweries. While the industry is expanding rapidly, growing 11% by volume in 2010, women within the industry are a vast minority. Out of the approximately 50,000 craft beer workers, only 598 currently belong to the Pink Boots Society, an organization for women in the industry.

Things weren’t always this way. Brewing used to be a household chore that fell upon women. Both Egyptian and Sumerian cultures have goddesses of beer, and in in the middle ages, fewer than 8% of brewers were male. It wasn’t until the industrial revolution that brewing shifted from a women’s small enterprise to the domain of (mostly male) factory workers. Beer and brewing gained a “men’s club” stereotype and, further enforced by marketing and popular media, the industry has remained a heavily male-dominated field.

However, in the Pacific NW, women are fighting their way towards being some of the most influential people in the brewing industry. From the farm to the consumer, Pacific NW women are setting new standards for brewing and changing the way the nation looks at women and beer.

The Love of Beer features Sarah Pederson, owner of Saraveza, and Tonya Cornett, brewmaster of Bend Brewing. Walk into Saraveza, located in North Portland, and you’re instantly aware of Sarah’s deep passion and love for beer. Cozy and coffee-shop like, this beer bar offers a rotating tap of the finest craft brews, along with an impressive selection of bottles and cans. The menu echoes Sarah’s Wisconsin upbringing, and the walls, shelves, and nooks and crannys are filled with breweriana- vintage beer signs, lights, and ads. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and Sarah is often seen mingling with her customers, laughing and talking to them about beer. Things seem settled after Saraveza’s one year anniversary, but life rarely stays settled for long. Life changes suddenly force Sarah to change how she fits within the beer community and question how beer will continue to be at the front of her life.

As the head brewer of Bend Brewing Company, Tonya Cornett’s job reflects the typical small brewery brewer–keeping tanks full, producing plenty of IPA for the town’s tourists, and keeping the locals coming back with seasonal and specialty beers. But things are starting to shift for Tonya. People are recognizing her. People who have never tasted her beer know of her and are dying for a sip. And she keeps winning medals. In 2008, she became the first woman to win Small Brewer and Brewpub of the year at the World Beer Cup. We follow Tonya’s career and join her in competitions, watching her continually change how the industry views brewers in pigtails, and watching her struggle to accept her fame and how it will alter her career and life.

The Love of Beer has a hearty supporting cast.
Thoughts from filmmaker Alison Grayson:
About three years ago I impulsively moved from Philadelphia to Portland and lived with a friend who was involved with the Portland craft beer industry. I was blown away by how instantly warm and welcoming this community was-it was unlike anything I had ever seen. The craft beer community quickly became my second family, and I started incorporating my background in video production by making short videos for friends’ beer blogs, festivals, etc. I started going to more events and met more and more people in the community and in the industry. I began to notice a huge disconnect between the vast amount of women beer consumers and the sparse number of women who worked in the beer industry. After meeting inspirational women like Sarah Pederson, Tonya Cornett, Lisa Morrison, and Teri Fahrendorf, I knew that I had to make a documentary celebrating the amazing women in the industry and introduce others to the community I had fallen in love with. This documentary has been funded by fundraising events and through Kickstarter, and would not have been able to be completed without the support of the community. I can’t thank everyone enough.

Teri Fahrendorf, the second female brewmaster in the US, introduces us to the Pink Boots Society, an organization devoted to supporting, educating, and opening doors for women in the beer industry. We visit Gayle Goshie, owner of Goshie Farms, during hop harvest, and Amy Welch as she diligently cleans taplines for one of Portland’s favorite breweries. There are dozens of jobs waiting for women in the beer industry, and we do our best to expose as many as possible.

The Pacifc NW Beer Industry would not be complete without the beer community, composed of those inside the community, and the fans, supporters, and advocates outside of the industry. We frequently visit members of the community to celebrate why they love about beer, to dissect why there aren’t more women involved, and to explore what can be done to change that.

These inspiring women are not afraid to fight discrimination and make sacrifices for the sake of their craft. While these women acknowledge that their struggles are opening doors for females everywhere, they’re not doing it for feminism or equality…they’re doing it for the love of beer.

About Brewing up Cocktails
Founded by Ezra Johnson-Greenough, a brewer, writer, artist and event coordinator, Brewing Up Cocktails started as a one-time event for Oregon Craft Beer Month in July 2010 and has turned into something much larger. Johnson-Greenough asked hot local bartender/mixologist and writer Jacob Grier to collaborate with him in crafting some unique beer cocktails in the hope of proving that craft beers can be as good in mixed drinks as they are on their own. The venue they chose had to have great beer and an outstanding selection of fine spirits, and that is where partner Yetta Vorobik’s property, North Portland hotspot The Hop & Vine, came in. In addition to a great location for events, Vorobik adds her creative spirit and an adventurous third palate to the mix.
The July 2010 event was met with great interest, but it was not until the partners decided to do a follow-up event in the fall that the critics and public started to catch on. Beervana described one of Brewing Up Cocktails’ signature drinks, the Hot Scotchy, as:

“Straight-ahead beer fan that I am, I have to agree that beer cocktails open up a brave new world.”

And Portland Monthly Magazine said:

“A merger of Portland’s craft beer and quality cocktail cultures could push the next evolution of our increasingly sophisticated drinking scene.”

And finally the Associated Press caught on, with a story carried internationally, including on ABC News.

In collaboration with 33 Beers and 11th Ave. Liquor & Cigars the New School presents a unique pairing event for Oregon Craft Beer Month of Beer & Cigars at East Burn’s fine patio.

Dave Selden an avid homebrewer, blogger and Creative Director launched a little tasting note booklet called 33 Beers that has become an incredible success and a staple for many beer geeks to keep on hand. Off the success of 33 Beers Dave has launched a new book taking the same concept and applying it to Cigars with the launch of 33 Cigars.
The New School a beer blog is always interested in new creative ways to examine beer and explore it’s possibilities with unique pairings so this event and the opportunity to announce 33 Cigars arrival in style was a natural fit. Together with Ed Ryan of PDX Cigars the 3 founders got together to explore the possibilities in pairing these two wonderful vices together and came up with 3 unique pairings:

Berger & Argenti Mooch with Upright Seven

Gurkha Evil with Ninkasi Oatis

and

Bad Dog Special Blend with Stone Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard

Along with these unique pairings attendees will get two more glasses of beer of their choice from East Burn’s taps for a total of 5 glasses of beer, two plates of food specifically designed for this event by East Burn’s chef and a copy of Dave Selden’s new 33 Cigars booklet. ABV: 8.2% IBU’s : 103

Beetje Brewing: Zure Krenten
A blend of fresh farmhouse ale, and a pale ale stored in
a Pinot Noir barrel with champagne currants and dosed with lambic
blend. Brewed with Pilsner, 2-row, wheat, crystal malts, and light
touch of noble hops. ABV: 6%

Breakside Brewing: Mango IPA
Our flagship IPA brewed with a twist: we tweaked the recipe on our best selling beer to suit it to the flavors of fresh mango. OG: 1.063 FG: 1.010 ABV: 6.8% IBU: approx. 55

Burnside Brewing: Gooseberry Berliner-Weisse
A slightly tart wheat beer with a mild fruitiness. This brew is lowly hoped ( 2ibu’s ) and fermented with a lactic bacteria in addition to the German ale yeast resulting in the slightly sour finish. A percentage of this beer was put into french oak barrels and aged with 50 pounds of Washington grown Gooseberries. ABV: 3.35% IBU’S: 2.1

Dogfish Head: Festina Peche
A refreshing neo-BerlinerWeisse fermented with honest-to-goodness peaches to (get this!) 4.5% abv! Because extreme beers don’t have to be extremely boozy!

Fort George Brewing: Badda BOOM! Cherry Stout
Coming in at 6.9% abv, rich and dark as a moonless night in the orchard, Badda BOOM! has 40 pounds of raspberries and Cherries mingling famously with the Belgian yeast esters and black barley bitters.

An Abbey Ale crossed with a Cider and fermented with Chimay yeast.

New Belgium: Ooh La La
Ale brewed with Rasberries 8.5% abv

Ninkasi Brewing: Pinot Barrel-Aged Oatis with Cherries
Oatis Oatmeal stout with cherries aged in Pinot Noir Casks. 7.2 % and 50 ibus.

Oakshire Brewing: Blind Date
An Oat Brown Ale made with Organic Dates
Blind Date is a medium bodied Belgian Brown Ale with a balanced bitterness from Calypso Hops. It is crafted with juicy Organic Dates. It has hints of fruit, a touch of roast and a smooth silky texture from the oats. The beer finishes with a mild sweetness from the dates. 6% Abv

Upright Brewing: Barrel-Aged Pure Wit with Orange

Karl Strauss Brewing Company and the Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Chapter, are hosting the 8th Annual Beach to Brewery Beer and Music Fest on Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 2pm-7pm. The benefit takes place at the Karl Strauss Main Brewery in Pacific Beach and includes 22 beers on tap, live local music, and a non-competitive bike ride from the beach to the brewery.

To celebrate Karl Strauss’ 22nd Anniversary, the event will feature 22 unique beers on tap, including the new Blackball Belgian IPA, 22nd Anniversary Barrel-Aged Vanilla Imperial Stout, seasonal favorite Pintail Pale Ale, and World Beer Cup/Great American Beer Festival gold-medal winning Red Trolley Ale. In addition to the diverse assortment of beers on tap, there will be 5 special casks created just for the event, including a Scotch on Scotch brew and a Lavender Hefeweizen. Tours of the expanded brewery and bottling line will be available throughout the event.

Beach to Brewery is known for showcasing local talent, and this year is no exception. Little Deadman kicks things off—they recently recorded a new album and this is their first show in months—followed by indie rockers Cuckoo Chaos and Blackout Party. Stranger will close the night with their world beat rock. Local non-profit, Sezio, will be on-site screen printing made-to-order band t’s and a limited edition event shirt.

To date, Karl Strauss Brewing Company has raised over $80,000 for the local San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation through Beach to Brewery. This year, in an effort to support Surfrider’s “Rise Above Plastics” campaign, guests will be given a reusable souvenir cup that will replace more than 10,000 disposable plastic cups at the event. Karl Strauss has hired Hands-On Recycling to individually sort the remaining recyclables from trash to divert unnecessary waste from landfills. Leading up to the main event, the company is supporting Surfrider’s cause in a hands-on way by hosting an employee beach clean up to keep its local Pacific Beach neighborhood clean.

Tickets for Beach to Brewery are $25 pre-sale and $30 at the door. Attendees have the option to add a 1-year Surfrider membership for the discounted price of $15 when purchasing their event ticket online. The event has sold out the past four years, so guests are encouraged to buy tickets early. Free shuttles to and from the event will depart from Dusty Rhodes Park in Ocean Beach as well as the Library in Pacific Beach and run throughout the event. For tickets and more information visit: www.karlstrauss.com. Share it. Cheers.

About Karl Strauss Brewing Company
Karl Strauss Brewing Company is celebrating 22 years of brewing in San Diego. From humble roots, a big vision, and the desire to share handcrafted beer with America’s Finest, Karl Strauss has grown from one brewery restaurant to a local institution—brewing 34,000 barrels in 2010 and operating six successful brewery restaurants across Southern California. The company has not strayed from its pioneering roots with new releases like Big Barrel IIPA and Whistler Imperial Pils, while still capturing hearts and the 2010 WBC and GABF gold medals for long-time favorites like Red Trolley Ale. With distribution solely in California, Karl Strauss is ranked #44 on the list of the country’s top craft breweries.

For more information visit www.karlstrauss.com or call the brewery at (858) 273-2739.

A new kind of beer festival kicks off this June outside of one of Portland’s newest breweries, Burnside Brewing. Fruit beers are the red-headed stepchild of craft beer, often overlooked by beer lovers because of preconceptions that they are sweet, boring, or artificially flavored. The first annual Portland Fruit Beer Festival aims to change all that and open minds to the strange and exotic possibilities that fruit beers can offer.

Featuring more than 20 different beers from over 15 breweries from the Northwest and beyond, the Portland Fruit Beer Festival is a celebration of the wonderful variety that fruits offer and the incredible and unique beers brewers can make with them. The PFBF will take place June 11th and 12th (Friday and Saturday) in the parking lot of Burnside Brewing. The festival welcomes all ages with free entry, and the Burnside Brewing pub will also be open for regular business, offering dinner and overflow seating from the fest. 15 beers will pour outdoors in the partially covered parking lot. A special few taps will be offered next door in the brewery’s production space, featuring extremely rare rotating beers that have very limited availability. Tasting glasses are available for $6 and are required to sample beers at the festival. Tickets are $1 each. A 4oz pour requires 1 ticket, with pints available for 4 tickets on the primary 14-15 beers. The rare rotating taps will range from 1-3 tickets a 4 oz pour. Food options include Tastebud’s mobile wood-fired oven and Burnside’s own outdoor BBQ, and there will be juice and soda for those not partaking in beer and live entertainment.

Beers and Breweries:
Festival organizers approached brewers with the challenge of making original beers using real whole, pureed, or juiced fruits without using any of the extracts or flavorings that have contributed to giving fruit beers a bad name. Brewers stepped up to the plate with beers ranging from Hopworks Belgian Red Delicious Apple Biere to Laurelwood’s Asian fruit and Spice beer. Of course Oregon beer drinkers love the hops and fruit beers are notoriously absent of them, but not this time. Hopheads will likely enjoy Breakside Brewery’s Mango IPA and Alameda’s Yellow Wolf Imperial IPA infused with huckleberries, among others. In all, more than 15 breweries will be participating with over 20 beers to choose from: Burnside Brewing, Hopworks Urban Brewing, Ninkasi, Dogfish Head, Widmer Brothers, New Belgium, Upright, Cascade, Oakshire, Block 15, Laurelwood, Fort George, Breakside, Lompoc, Alameda, Double Mountain and Beetje Brewing.

Full beer list to be announced soon.

Homebrewing Competition:
Adding to the fun will also be a Homebrewers Competition organzied by the Oregon Brew Crew. Homebrewers will be given the same challenge as the pro brewers – to brew the freshest and most original fruit beers they can. Judging will take place in 3 different categories: light, dark, and sour fruit beers. Prizes will be offered to the victors in each category, as well as a grand prize for Best in Show. All profits from the $6 entry fee will be donated back to the OBC, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting the art of homebrewing. More info can be found here.

Food and Entertainment:
In addition to the main attraction of beer, there will also be food vendors like Tastebud, which will be making delicious wood-fired pizzas and bagel sandwiches with fresh ingredients, and Burnside Brewing with their own outdoor BBQ and grill catering. For those not drinking alcohol, sodas and juice refreshments will be available, and you can expect Live Music/DJ’s TBA.

Partners:
The Portland Fruit Beer Festival is lucky to have some amazing partners in this year’s festival:

Yelp has a networking community that helps people find, rate, and review local businesses since 2004 and brings in over 39 million monthly unique visitors.

KBOO Community Radio is a Volunteer-Powered, Non-Commercial, Listener-Sponsored, Full-Strength Community Radio for Portland, Oregon, Cascadia & the World!

About Burnside Brewing:
Located in the heart of Portland’s eastside, Burnside Brewing is Portland’s newest craft brewery, having just opened in December 2010. The venture’s three partners, Adam Cassie, Jay Gilbert, and Jason McAdam, bring a wealth of experience and knowledge in both the beer and restaurant businesses. Brewmaster Jason McAdam comes with over 15 years professional brewing experience. With a shiny brand new 15bbl brewhouse from Portland’s Metalcraft Fabrication, Burnside Brewing is crafting both staple beers like IPA and Stout and more creative spins on the traditional, such as the Sweet Heat, a wheat beer brewed with apricots and Scotch Bonnet peppers. The brewpub itself is a large, open, and lively space featuring massive heartwood beams, a black walnut and distressed steel bar, and an open kitchen. Speaking of the kitchen, Burnside Brewing takes the menu a step further than traditional brewpub fare, offering an array of house made pickles, charcuterie, cured meats, and gastronomy experiments from Chef Ronnie Vance. Burnside Brewing aims to be a staple and partner of the quickly growing eastside community along lower Burnside Street.
