Bend’s Platypus Pub closed for renovations, to re-open with their own beer

The Platypus PubBend’s Platypus Pub is currently closed to undergo a makeover and some renovations, which will last through the rest of September before a planned October 1st re-opening. From their Facebook post:

After two years of operation we decided it was time to shake things up a bit. Platypus Pub will be temporarily closing to do some renovations and make some changes to our menu. We are excited to announce that when we re-open we will be offering our first Platypus Pub Beer. Please look for our e-mail and advertisements announcing the October 1st Grand Re-opening/2nd Anniversary Party.

Among the renovations and changes co-owner Tom Gilles told me about include painting, getting new tables and chairs, and hiring a new chef.

And of course of particular interest is their “first Platypus Pub beer“: it’s been known for awhile that they have a (small) brewing system space and their brewpub license, but they simply haven’t had the time to focus on brewing their own beer. So I’m excited to see they are finally officially making it happen—which by my count would make them the 22nd brewery in Central Oregon (unless RiverBend Brewing opens first, which would then be 22 and 23, respectively).

The Platypus Pub is located in the basement of the building shared with the Brew Shop on Third Street in Bend (a former restaurant and church); the Brew Shop itself remains open, which in addition to brewing supplies also hosts an expansive selection of bottled and canned beer in the bottleshop portion of the business.
