American Macro Week: Busch Beer

American Macro WeekBusch is the "value" brand beer from Anheuser-Busch. Apparently it’s "the country’s largest-selling subpremium-priced beer in all major demographics"… that’s a long-winded way to say "cheap."

This is one of those beers for which I have the least familiarity. Here’s an interesting tidbit, though: introduced in 1955, "Busch also holds a noted place in Anheuser-Busch history as the first new brand after the repeal of Prohibition."

Served up in the 24-ounce can… right now I think it’s tied with Coors Light for having the ugliest package design.

Busch BeerAppearance: Clear pale yellow—a bit lighter than most of the others. Head is foamy and pure white.

Smell: Pretty sparse aroma profile; there’s a bit of grain but not much else. (Amazing how something can have almost no smell like this…)

Taste: Flavor is very neutral… a very mild note of malt grain sweetness… no hop character whatsoever. It’s so light, it’s watery.

Mouthfeel: Very light and watery. Very much like a mildly-sparkling water.

The verdict: I didn’t know Busch Beer was supposed to be a "Light" beer, but that’s very much what it is. Not as light as Coors Light—much—but almost completely neutral. I’m amazed that they do actually make a "Busch Light" in addition to this one… I can’t even imagine.

On BeerAdvocate, it scores a letter grade of D (the Bros. say D-). On RateBeer, it scores 1.21 out of 5, and is in their 0 percentile. I’m not sure I’ve seen a beer at 0 on RateBeer before.
