Advent Beer Calendar 2017: Day 3: JW Lees Christmas Plum Pudding

JW Lees Christmas Plum Pudding

For this third day of December, we travel to England and the venerable JW Lees for our Advent beer pick: JW Lees Christmas Plum Pudding. Billed as Christmas in a glass, this is a “fruity ale” that’s 4.8% alcohol by volume. The brewery says:

Every family has a few Christmas traditions and this one’s ours. By using a blend of pale ale and crystal malt, Styrian Golding hops, and some festive ripe fruit flavours, it’s nothing less than Christmas wrapped up in a glass. We all love brewing it, almost as much as we love tasting it.

Plum pudding is a type of Christmas pudding tradtitionally served with Christmas dinner in the United Kingdom, and is analogous to fruitcake — “composed of many dried fruits held together by egg and suet, sometimes moistened by treacle or molasses and flavoured with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and other spices,” soaked in brandy and aged for a month or more.

I don’t know that the JW Lees version has actual fruit in it—if so, I would assume plums, naturally—but it would be a fine addition to your traditional Christmas dinner regardless.
