Advent Beer Calendar 2017: Day 23: Avery Rumpkin

Avery Brewing Rumpkin

This is the next-to-last day of the Beer Advent Calendar, and it also happens to be my birthday! As part of my annual tradition, today’s beer pick isn’t a Christmas beer per se, but it is definitely a specialty, celebratory beer that’s “for me.” It’s always fun to pick out something extravagant to share.

For this year, I’ve chosen Avery Brewing’s monstrously strong, rum-barrel aged pumpkin ale, Rumpkin. Avery has been brewing delicious high-strength barrel-aged beers for years, and Rumpkin—currently at 16.9% alcohol by volume, though I’ve seen at least one vintage in the 18% range—is simply my favorite. Not the least of which is because it’s a pumpkin ale!

We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happens!

Of course, this is unlike most other pumpkin beers you will experience, simply because its high alcohol puts in a class by itself—not unlike a pumpkin cordial. It’s sweet and rich and decadent and boozy, thick on the tongue, warming in the throat, and most definitely an experience!
